Bring the Rain

Recently, I was talking with someone about their keen ability to notice process inefficiencies.

Whether they are in a store, a church, a restaurant or someone’s kitchen, they see ways to do things differently that would save time and effort. It’s truly a gift. Or is it a curse? Either way, they cannot deny they were made to disrupt. They have no choice but to see what they see. The choice they have is how they will use what they see. That choice will determine whether others experience them as like a dripping faucet or a refreshing rain.

We all have such a choice. Whatever it is that we cannot not see, we get to choose how we will use it. Some people see process inefficiencies. Others see design. Others see relationships. Some see past context and some see the future unfolding. We all see something others around us may not see. We’re all wired to work together, to contribute what we see to something bigger than ourselves. And that’s sometimes the hard part, seeing outside and beyond ourselves in order to be like a refreshing rain.

If we only see our part and not how it fits into the whole, we’ll miss the things others have to contribute. We may come across much like a dripping faucet. Annoying. Distracting. Bothersome. Don’t be a dripping faucet. Be a refreshing rain. Elevating. Catalyzing. Optimizing.

The next time you see something, stop and think before you speak. And do speak. Just consider what’s going on around you first. What might you not be seeing? What’s the best way for you to contribute your part without overlooking the contribution of others? Elevate. Catalyze. Optimize.

Don’t fret about getting it right, just care about how you share and enjoy being a part of something bigger than yourself. This month gives you a great opportunity to practice seeing outside and beyond yourself as you gather together with family and friends for Thanksgiving.

Do what you can to bring the rain!
