Could It Be Time for Assisted Living? Starting the Conversation

The holidays have a special way of bringing us home. Families and friends gather around familiar tables, prepare treasured recipes, tell old stories and celebrate traditions passed down through generations.

They can also be a time when family and friends notice changes in an aging loved one that may not be as apparent during a phone call.

Maybe a loved one seems more forgetful than they did last year. Perhaps their home isn’t as tidy as it once was, or you notice they aren’t getting out as often. One change doesn’t necessarily mean it’s time for assisted living, but holiday visits can be an opportunity to slow down, spend meaningful time together and start a conversation. Ask your loved one how things are going, what feels more difficult and what support they would welcome.

Are everyday responsibilities becoming more difficult?

Is their home generally clean and safe? Are dishes, laundry, unopened mail or household chores beginning to pile up? Maintaining a home may be taking more energy than it once did.

Are they eating well and caring for themselves?

Are they able to shop for groceries and prepare regular meals? Are there fresh foods available in the refrigerator and pantry? Changes in weight, hygiene or eating habits can signal that everyday tasks are becoming more challenging.

Are medications being managed safely?

Are they taking their medications as prescribed? Missed doses, duplicate doses or confusion surrounding prescriptions may indicate that additional support could be helpful.

Have you noticed changes in memory or judgment?

Occasional forgetfulness happens to everyone. Repeating questions, missing appointments, becoming confused in familiar situations or struggling with once-routine tasks may deserve a closer look.

Are they still doing the things that make them who they are?

Are they still seeing friends, attending church, cooking, gardening, listening to music or enjoying favorite hobbies? Or has their world gradually become smaller?

Independence isn’t only about the ability to live alone. It’s also about having opportunities for purpose, connection and joy.

Are you worried when you leave?

When your holiday visit ends, are you confident your loved one is safe, eating well and enjoying their days? Or are you already wondering who will check on them tomorrow?

Recognizing these changes doesn’t mean a decision needs to be made around the Thanksgiving table. Take time to listen to your loved one’s perspective and discuss any concerns together. These changes don’t always mean a move is needed, but they may be a reason to speak with their healthcare provider and explore additional support.

At Peregrine Senior Living, The Peregrine Way® focuses on helping residents maintain a connection to themselves through long-term memories, family, meaningful experiences and person-centered care. Moving to assisted living doesn’t mean leaving behind who someone has always been. The right environment celebrates their stories, interests and abilities while providing support where it’s needed.

Starting the conversation is about looking beyond whether the person you care about can still live at home and talking together about whether their current living situation supports their safety, connection and quality of life.

If your visit raises questions or concerns, we’re here to help. The team at Peregrine Senior Living at Cheektowaga can listen, answer your questions and help you and your loved one explore options that fit their needs and preferences.
