Don’t Let a Small Plumbing Problem Become a Holiday Headache

Fall in Georgia means cooler mornings, football Saturdays, family gatherings, and the beginning of the busy holiday season. While plumbing may not be at the top of your fall to-do list, this is one of the best times of year to make sure your home is ready for the months ahead.

A little preventive maintenance now can help you avoid an unexpected plumbing problem when your house is full of family and friends.

Check Those Outdoor Faucets

Georgia weather can change quickly. One week may feel like summer, and the next can bring freezing overnight temperatures. Take time to disconnect garden hoses when they are no longer being used and check outdoor faucets for leaks.

Exposed plumbing in garages, crawl spaces, and other unheated areas should also be inspected. Damaged or missing pipe insulation can leave pipes vulnerable when temperatures drop below freezing.

Get Your Water Heater Holiday-Ready

More guests usually mean more showers, more dishes, and more demand for hot water. If your water heater has been making unusual noises, producing rusty-looking water, leaking, or struggling to keep up, do not wait until Thanksgiving morning to have it checked.

Routine maintenance can help identify potential problems and keep your system operating efficiently.

Be Kind to Your Kitchen Drain

Some of the biggest plumbing problems during the holidays begin in the kitchen. Turkey grease, cooking oils, fats, bones, coffee grounds, and fibrous foods do not belong down the drain.

Grease is especially troublesome. It may go down as a liquid, but as it cools, it can harden inside your pipes and contribute to serious blockages.

Pay Attention to Slow Drains

A slow sink, shower, or tub is often your plumbing system’s way of telling you something is not right. Addressing a developing clog early is much easier than dealing with a completely blocked drain when guests arrive.

Finally, make sure everyone in your household knows where the main water shut-off valve is located. In an emergency, shutting off the water quickly can help minimize damage.

At Drain King Plumbing, we believe a little prevention goes a long way. Take care of those small plumbing concerns this fall so you can spend the holidays worrying about what really matters—family, food, and maybe who wins the big game.
