Home for the Holidays: Giving Thanks and Understanding Homeowners’ Liability

  • Copied!

In the Bay Area, Thanksgiving gatherings take many forms. Some families welcome a house full of relatives, while others celebrate with a few close friends around the dinner table. Regardless of how we celebrate, opening our homes to the people we care about is one of the season’s greatest joys.

But as we prepare for holiday gatherings, it’s worth considering something that rarely makes the Thanksgiving checklist: protecting ourselves from unexpected liability risks.

When Hospitality Comes With Responsibility

Imagine hosting Thanksgiving dinner when a guest slips on your front steps or trips over an extension cord. Accidents can happen even in the most carefully maintained homes.

Personal liability coverage, typically included in homeowners insurance, may help protect you financially if you’re found legally responsible for someone’s injury or property damage. Depending on your policy and the circumstances, this protection may help cover legal defense costs, damages, or settlements.

Understanding your coverage before an accident occurs can make a meaningful difference.

What Happens If a Guest Gets Injured?

Most homeowner policies also include medical payments to other people’s coverage. Unlike personal liability coverage, this protection may help pay certain minor medical expenses when a guest is accidentally injured on your property, regardless of fault, subject to policy terms and limits.

For example, if a visitor trips while entering your home and requires medical attention, this coverage may help with eligible expenses.

However, medical payment coverage generally has relatively low limits, making it important to understand how these two protections differ.

Simple Ways to Make Holiday Gatherings Safer

Before welcoming your guests this Thanksgiving, consider a few precautions:

  • Clear walkways: Remove clutter, secure loose rugs, and keep outdoor pathways well lit.
  • Be mindful of pets: Even friendly animals can become overwhelmed by unfamiliar visitors or crowded spaces.
  • Practice kitchen safety: Keep cooking areas organized and children away from hot surfaces.
  • Prepare for rainy weather: Wet leaves, slippery porches, and damp entryways can increase fall risk.
  • Review your liability limits: Consider whether your existing coverage provides adequate financial protection.

An Extra Layer of Protection

For homeowners with significant assets, a personal umbrella insurance policy may provide additional liability protection beyond the limits of their homeowner and auto policies, subject to its terms and exclusions.

As home values and personal assets grow, reviewing liability coverage can be as important as reviewing the insurance protecting your home.

Protecting What Matters Most

Thanksgiving reminds us that a home is more than its walls and roof. It’s where families gather, friendships grow, and traditions are passed from one generation to the next.

As you prepare to welcome loved ones this holiday season, take a moment to make sure your insurance protection keeps pace with your life.

From my family and our team at Odalis Ordonez Insurance Agency, we wish you a safe, joyful, and memorable Thanksgiving!
