Who says Grandma and Grandpa are only good for babysitting? These days, they’re packing their passports, grabbing the grandkids and heading off on adventures of their own. And Mom and Dad? Well, they’re staying home!
Welcome to the world of skip-generation travel, or skip-gen travel, where grandparents vacation with their grandchildren while the parents sit this one out. It’s a wonderful way to strengthen family bonds, explore new destinations, and create memories that last a lifetime.
More Than Just a Vacation
There’s something special about travelling with your grandparents. Away from everyday routines and school schedules, grandparents and grandchildren have an opportunity to connect in a completely different way.
Imagine Grandpa teaching his grandson to snorkel in the Caribbean, Grandma exploring Rome with her granddaughter or sharing family stories over dinner in a beautiful new destination.
For grandparents, it’s an opportunity to share their passions and introduce their grandchildren to new cultures. And for the grandkids? Let’s be honest. Grandparents are often a little more generous with the ice cream budget!
Where Are They Going?
Cruises
One of my favourite options for skip-gen travel. With entertainment, kids’ clubs, dining and exciting ports of call conveniently packaged together, cruises offer something for everyone. Grandparents can enjoy a little downtime while the grandchildren make new friends, and everyone can reunite for an adventure ashore. Older grandchildren may enjoy more luxury, premium, or river cruises.
European Experiences
Portugal, Italy and France are wonderful destinations for families interested in history, culture and food. Imagine exploring ancient castles, taking a pasta-making class or discovering a new city together. These experiences turn a vacation into a living history lesson, without anyone realizing they’re learning!
All-Inclusive Caribbean Getaways
From Ocho Rios to the Bridgeport, all-inclusive resorts are fantastic for grandparents travelling with grandchildren. Beautiful beaches, pools, supervised kids’ clubs and plenty of dining options mean everyone can enjoy their vacation at their own pace.
And the best part? Nobody has to argue about where to eat!
Winter Break Getaways
Why leave all the winter break fun to Mom and Dad? Grandparents can turn the school holidays into an unforgettable adventure, whether it’s hitting the slopes on a family ski trip, exploring Europe’s festive Christmas markets or escaping to a sunny Caribbean beach.
With a little planning, winter break becomes an opportunity to create new family traditions and spend quality time together. And if Grandma and Grandpa prefer sunshine over shovelling snow, who can blame them?
A Little Planning Goes a Long Way
Before Grandma announces she’s taking the kids to Europe, there are a few things to consider.
Choose a destination that suits everyone’s interests, ages and energy levels. Build in downtime, discuss budgets and ensure the grandchildren have appropriate travel documents, medical information and parental consent letters when travelling internationally.
Most importantly, involve the grandchildren in planning. Giving them a say in the itinerary makes the experience even more meaningful.
And grandparents, remember: you don’t need to fill every minute with activities. Sometimes the best memories happen during an unplanned afternoon at the beach.
The Greatest Gift Is Time
In a world where families are juggling busy schedules and competing priorities, skip-gen travel offers something increasingly valuable: uninterrupted time together. It’s an opportunity for grandparents to pass down family traditions, share stories and experience the world through younger eyes.
The souvenirs will eventually gather dust, but those shared adventures? They’ll become family stories told for generations.
And as for Mom and Dad, enjoy the peace and quiet. Just don’t be surprised if the kids come home asking when they’re going on vacation with Grandma and Grandpa again!
