Not Ready for Senior Living Yet? That May Be the Perfect Time to Start Planning

“I’m not ready yet.”

It’s one of the most common things people say when the subject of senior living comes up. And often, they’re absolutely right. They may be healthy, active, independent and enjoying the life they have created.

But there’s an important difference between not being ready to move and not being ready to plan.

In fact, the best time to explore your options may be when you don’t need them yet.

When there’s no immediate health concern or deadline, you have something incredibly valuable: time. Time to visit communities, learn about different options, understand costs, ask questions and decide what matters most to you. You can talk with family without the pressure that often comes with an unexpected health event.

Retirement planning is about more than finances. It’s also about asking yourself, “What do I want the next chapter of my life to look like?”

Maybe it means traveling more, staying active, spending time with friends and family, or having fewer home-maintenance responsibilities. Perhaps it means knowing you have a plan in place if your needs change someday.

Think about the home and lifestyle that work well for you today. Will they work just as well at 80 or 90? What about transportation, home maintenance, social connections or access to healthcare? If you ever need additional support, where will it come from?

You don’t have to know all the answers today. That’s the point of planning.

Exploring your options doesn’t mean you’ve decided to move. Touring a community doesn’t obligate you to live there. Asking questions certainly doesn’t mean you’re giving up your independence.

Quite the opposite. Being informed can be one of the best ways to protect it.

So, if your answer today is, “I’m not ready yet,” that may actually be good news.

You have time. And having time means you have choices.

If you’re beginning to think about what your next chapter might look like, the team at Spring Harbor at Green Island is happy to answer your questions and help you better understand your options.
