This November, Give Your Skin the Checkup It Deserves

We schedule routine visits for our teeth, our eyes, our physicals. Skin often gets left off that list, even though it’s the organ most exposed to the outside world every day. National Healthy Skin Month, observed each November, is a good nudge to change that here in Auburn.

Healthy skin habits don’t have to be complicated. Wash with a gentle cleanser, moisturize daily, and wear a broad-spectrum sunscreen of SPF 30 or higher, regardless of the season. Cooler weather doesn’t mean lower UV exposure, and consistent protection now helps prevent the damage that shows up later, both cosmetically and medically.

It’s also worth getting familiar with your own skin. Set a reminder once a month to look over any moles or spots you have, and watch for the ABCDE warning signs: Asymmetry, an irregular Border, uneven Color, a Diameter larger than a pencil eraser, or a spot that’s Evolving in size or shape. Any of these is a reason to get it checked, not to wait and see.

Early detection is what makes skin cancer one of the most treatable cancers there is. An annual skin exam with a board-certified provider catches things that are easy to miss on your own, often before they become a bigger concern.

If it’s been more than a year since your last exam, or you’ve never had one, let this be the month you schedule it. Our team is ready to help.
