Protect Your Home Before the Holiday Guests Arrive

The turkey is ordered, extra chairs are coming out, and family members are asking what to bring. Before everyone arrives, take a few minutes to check your home insurance. Nobody plans for an accident during Thanksgiving dinner, but knowing what your policy covers can help you avoid an expensive surprise.

What if a guest gets hurt

Imagine a relative walking up your front steps with a pie in hand. They slip on wet leaves, fall, and need stitches. Your homeowners policy may help pay their medical bills through coverage called medical payments to others. This can apply even if you were not at fault, but it has a dollar limit.

If the guest claims you caused the injury by failing to fix an unsafe condition, a different part of your policy, called personal liability coverage, may help with a covered claim. Ask your agent to explain both. Before guests arrive, clear the steps, tighten loose railings, and turn on outdoor lights.

Keep an eye on the kitchen

It is easy to get pulled away from the stove when someone rings the doorbell or needs help setting the table. Stay in the kitchen while cooking on the stovetop. Thanksgiving is the leading day for home cooking fires, according to the National Fire Protection Association.

If a cooking fire damages your cabinets, homeowners insurance generally helps pay for covered repairs. You may need to pay a deductible, which is your share of the covered loss. If the damage means you cannot safely stay home, your policy may also help with extra costs, such as a hotel. Check the limits before you need that help.

Plan ahead if you are serving alcohol

Along with the wine and beer, offer alcohol-free choices. If someone has had too much to drink, help arrange a ride or a place to stay. Before the party, ask your agent how your policy handles claims involving alcohol. Do not assume every situation is covered.

Ask about extra protection

A serious fall can lead to more than a quick visit to urgent care. Surgery, a long recovery, and a lawsuit could lead to a claim larger than your homeowners liability limit.

An umbrella policy can add liability protection above your home or auto policy limits for covered claims. It has its own rules, and you must keep the coverage it requires on your other policies. Your agent can help you decide whether it makes sense for your family.

As you get ready for the holidays, put an insurance checkup on the list. A quick conversation can help you understand what is covered, what is not, and what you would pay yourself.
