For the last 45 years, the world of braces has largely remained unchanged. No doubt orthodontics has seen some great technologies such as clear aligner therapy, digital impressions, 3D conebeam x-rays, and remote monitoring, but the brackets and wires themselves are almost exactly the same as those used in the 1980’s.
In 2019, that changed when I launched the world’s 1st metal custom braces system earning me the American Association of Orthodontists’ Ortho Innovator award while at the same time a colleague of mine was launching the world’s 1st clear custom braces in Massachusetts. Over the past 7 years, we have added clear and self-ligating braces to our portfolio as well. So what??? The reason this impacts treatment so much is it allows us to position the teeth digitally, then reverse engineer a custom set of braces for each and every patient. This translates to orthodontists being able to use wires that more perfectly fill the braces to move teeth to the optimal position directly vs. reactively moving braces around or putting bends in the wires to course correct when the teeth don’t all track with a one-size-fits-all approach.
Over the last 5 years, we have sought out at Owen Orthodontic Center to see how to achieve faster treatment time with better results. What we’ve found is that comprehensive treatment that still averages 27 months across the US is taking under 12 months in our practice. The teeth aren’t moving any faster, they are moving with more accuracy and precision. This equates to less time in braces, fewer visits, and less discomfort along the braces journey. We are excited to share this technology with the Lake Travis area at Owen Orthodontic Center and with the world at KLOwen Orthodontics.
