Taming the Bedtime Routine

  • Copied!

As a pediatric dentist, and a mom, I know that bedtime can sometimes feel like the longest part of the day. By the time everyone has had dinner, found pajamas, and brushed their teeth, parents are tired and kids seem to suddenly find endless reasons to stay awake!

Over the years, both in my dental office and in my own home, I’ve learned that one of the biggest keys to a smoother bedtime is consistency. Children thrive when they know what to expect. A predictable routine helps them understand that the day is winding down and, just as importantly, that certain things—like brushing their teeth—aren’t negotiable.

Try creating a simple routine that happens in roughly the same order each night: pajamas, brush teeth, books, and bed. It doesn’t have to be complicated. The magic is in doing it consistently.

I’m also a big believer in giving choices without giving away the boundary. Let your child choose between two pairs of pajamas. Let them pick which toothbrush they want to use or which book you’ll read. But if they ask, “Do I have to brush my teeth?” the answer is still yes. Giving children choices helps them feel independent while allowing you, the parent, to remain in charge of the routine.

And believe me, as a mom, I know that sometimes it is much easier to just give in. “Fine, one more book.” “Okay, you can skip flossing tonight.”  We’ve all been there! But children quickly learn which boundaries are flexible. When we calmly and consistently stick to our expectations, they learn that the routine is simply part of the evening—not something they can negotiate every night.

There will absolutely be nights when bedtime doesn’t go according to plan. There are in every family, including mine! The goal isn’t perfection. It’s creating a routine that your child knows and can eventually take ownership of. As both a pediatric dentist and a mom, I’ve found that consistency, choices, and follow-through can turn bedtime battles into bedtime habits.  And when that routine ends with a good tooth brushing, that’s a win in my book!
