What Does a Chiropractic Adjustment Actually Do?

You have probably seen the sensational videos on TikTok or Instagram where chiropractors are pulling heads, pushing on backs, and jumping on patients all to create that “cracking” noise. Video after video produces loud crunches and satisfied patients, and some viewers can’t get enough of it.

But what happens when someone receives an adjustment? First, not all adjustments produce noise or even require a hands-on approach. Chiropractors use many techniques ranging from very soft touch and instrumentation to those that require a little more force. Regardless of the technique, however, the purpose of adjustments is to enhance the body’s natural healing properties.

Your nervous system, which runs your body, is composed of your brain, spinal cord, and nerves. The spinal cord is protected by 24 movable bones called vertebrae, which have small openings to allow the nerves to exit into the body.

Over time, due to gravity and daily activities, playing sports, or trauma from a fall or automobile accident, restrictions can form, causing pressure to build in these vertebrae. This pressure can create irritation on the nerves, causing symptoms such as back pain, headaches, and sciatica.

Chiropractors are trained to identify these restrictions (called subluxations) and restore proper spinal mobility using adjustments and other techniques. As the proper mobility and function of the vertebra is restored, the pressure is relieved, the nervous system is no longer irritated, and the body heals.

Relieving symptoms isn’t the only benefit, though. Every time you receive a chiropractic adjustment, the mobility of your spine is enhanced, allowing better biomechanics and posture, as well as a reduction in degenerative disease progression. Improved circulation, boosted immune function, and enhanced nerve flow are other benefits that many patients experience.

Many people opt for wellness chiropractic care for these reasons. They discover that regular care not only helps them feel their best but has so many amazing health benefits as well. Just like regular exercise and eating well, chiropractic care can be a great strategy to keep you at your best.
