Avoid Back Surgery: A Success Story of Non-Surgical Spinal Decompression

When A., a nurse anesthesiologist, walked into my office, her determination to avoid another back surgery was palpable. A.’s journey with back pain began with two prior surgeries aimed at alleviating her low back and leg pain. However, the prospect of a third surgery—this time a spinal fusion—loomed over her, a daunting thought that I knew I had to address with her best interests at heart.

A., an athletic and vibrant professional, expressed her longing to return to her active lifestyle without the constant pain that compromised her career and daily living. Her neurosurgeon had forewarned that her next surgery would be the major one. This was a scenario we both hoped to avoid.

Her case was severe, involving a pronounced herniated disc and significant surgeries—post- laminectomy and multiple micro-discectomies—already undertaken. As her chiropractor and highly trained in disc disorders, I was determined to provide her with an alternative path, rooted in evidence and expertise. I delved into comprehensive research, notably a study by a Harvard neurosurgeon Dr Shealy; advocating for non-surgical spinal decompression as a precursor to major back surgeries, and insights from leading institutions like the Mayo Clinic and Johns Hopkins.

The Non-Surgical Approach

Together, we crafted a personalized treatment plan minus chiropractic adjustments on her neck, given her reservations and my own caution regarding contra-indications related to her severe herniation. Instead, we opted for:

  • Interferential Current Therapy: To relax the tense muscles around her back.

  • Non-Surgical Spinal Decompression: Aimed at nourishing the spinal disc by encouraging
fluid movement, thereby promoting natural healing.

  • Class IV Laser Therapy: This was key in penetrating the torn disc, accelerating healing,
    and reducing pain.

  • Customized Physical Therapy Exercises: Designed to safely strengthen her back,
introduced midway through her treatment. These were exercises to strengthen her back
that I created for patients from my post-graduate board certified training in physio-
    therapy.

During her 2 and a half months of diligent visits, A. experienced remarkable progress, reporting an 80% improvement in her pain levels. My excitement mirrored hers as she transitioned into monthly chiropractic adjustments as part of a maintenance routine.

Celebrating Success

Last week, A. shared her continued progress with me, a testament to the effectiveness of our non-surgical strategy. She’s returned to Pilates and other exercises she enjoyed before her surgeries, expressing gratitude for steering clear of further invasive procedures. Her story reaffirms the hope and potential of non-surgical spinal decompression for individuals like her, eager to reclaim their mobility and life.

The statistics around major back surgeries are sobering, with failure rates as high as 50% for initial surgeries and success rates plummeting below 30% for subsequent surgeries, as exemplified by high-profile cases like Tiger Woods. This path doesn’t have to be a foregone conclusion for those looking for alternatives.

A Way Forward

A.’s journey underscores the power of non-surgical intervention, offering a viable path for those seeking to manage their back issues without resorting to surgery. Given my background and national certification in disc disorders, it’s immensely rewarding to see such tangible results from these integral, non-invasive treatments.

For anyone facing the crossroads of another back surgery, consider exploring the benefits of non-surgical spinal decompression, supported by a chiropractor’s expertise. Let A.’s success story inspire you to imagine and pursue a journey of healing that supports your aspirations for an active, pain-free life.
