Everyday Tech Made Easy: QR Codes and Zoom

Technology today includes many tools that are meant to make life easier, faster, and more convenient. Two technology terms many people see or hear on daily nowadays, are QR code and Zoom. These tools do very different things and are used in different situations, but both have become very common in daily life. Understanding what they do, why they are used, and how they work can help reduce frustration and make technology feel more approachable.

The term QR code stands for Quick Response code. A QR code is a square image made up of many small black and white boxes. It is designed to store information in a visual pattern that a phone or tablet can read. When you scan a QR code, your device translates the pattern into a link and opens it for you. This is why QR codes are often used instead of printed website addresses.

You can find QR codes in many everyday places. Restaurants often use QR codes on tables or menus so customers can view food options on their phones. Medical offices may use QR codes on paperwork or signs to send you to forms or instructions. You may also see QR codes on flyers, posters, mail, product packaging, museum displays, event programs, or community bulletin boards. Some businesses place QR codes near checkout counters, while others include them in emails or letters. Once you start noticing them, you will see that QR codes are used almost everywhere.

QR codes are used because they are quick and simple. Instead of typing a long website address, which can be hard to read or easy to mistype, you scan the code and the information opens instantly. This makes QR codes helpful for people of all ages, especially when dealing with small print or long links.

Using a QR code is simple on most phones and tablets. You unlock your device and open the Camera app. When you point the camera at the QR code and hold it steady, your device recognizes the pattern. A message or link appears on the screen. When you tap that message, the information connected to the QR code opens. You do not need to take a picture, and most devices do not require a special app.

The term Zoom refers to a video meeting service that allows people to communicate through video and sound using the internet. Zoom makes it possible to see and talk to others even when they are far away. This is why Zoom is often used for doctor appointments, family conversations, meetings, church services, and educational classes.

Zoom works by using your device’s camera, microphone, and internet connection. When you join a Zoom meeting, your camera shows your video and your microphone carries your

voice. At the same time, you can see and hear the other people in the meeting on your screen. This creates a face-to-face experience without needing to travel.

To use Zoom, you first download the Zoom app from your device’s app store. After opening the app, you tap the button that says Join. You then enter a meeting number or tap a meeting link that was sent to you by email or text. When asked, you allow Zoom to use your camera and microphone. Once connected, the meeting opens and you can see the other participants.

Zoom includes simple on-screen buttons that give you control. You can mute yourself if you do not want others to hear background noise, turn your camera off if you want privacy, and leave the meeting at any time. These buttons are usually located at the bottom of the screen and are easy to tap.

Learning how technology works is easier when you can ask questions and practice in a calm setting. Silverado Orchards Retirement Community offers a welcoming technology class designed especially for seniors. We take the time to explain what tools like QR codes, Zoom, and others do, why they are used, and how they work, step by step. Our tech class is held on the last Tuesday of every month at 3:30 pm and is open to the public free of charge.
