Do We Need an Interior Designer?
Rethinking what design really means and who it is for.
When we look at accomplishments in our lives, we often find ourselves reflecting on being part of an amazing team. We think of the players, the roles, the collaboration and the successful outcome. We laugh at lessons learned along the ultimate path to success. But perhaps most importantly we grow to understand more about ourselves, our strengths and weaknesses, our passions and pain points, and ultimately what we truly enjoy doing. Life is about experience and only time enables us to have humble experiences to know what we truly love.
As I reflect on my personal joys along the route beyond the overflow of ever enjoyable memories, I find a deeper warmth of personal accomplishment. I smile and land on the experiences of building our own family homes, helping others build homes, restaurants and retreats. I fondly remember the architects, builders, landscapers, showrooms and interfacing with so many knowledgeable professionals. Perhaps most of all the experience of learning from them and feeling confidence and my own understanding growing with each new home and project in my life. From each of these milestones, I was able to learn what I love, what came natural to me, and why I wanted to help others.
One of my goals in formulating a great team at Accompli Home was a combined value of ‘listening’, ‘hearing’, and then ‘sharing’ both understanding and ideas. We have found a design balance through learning individual preferences while sharing options to an overall solution. This is fundamental to what we offer in design services. We get to know our customers, what they like and dislike and have found that balance is the key to personal design of their spaces.
Some people have a reluctance for interior design help. The term may conjure images of extravagant budgets, rigid rules, or spaces that look beautiful but feel impractical. In reality, today’s interior designers are far less about imposing a specific look and far more about helping clients shape homes that feel authentic, livable, and deeply personal.
One of the most common misnomers is that interior design is reserved only for luxury homes or unlimited budgets. Actually, a designer’s real expertise lies in understanding how to allocate resources wisely. A skilled designer knows where quality and craftmanship will have the greatest long-term impact, and can tap into long-established relationships with craftsmen, artists, and visionaries in the world of design. In many cases, their guidance can prevent costly mistakes.
Another misconception is that hiring a designer means surrendering creative control. The reality is quite the opposite. The best designers see themselves as collaborators, interpreting a client’s vision, lifestyle, and personality and translating it into a cohesive design. Our role is to refine ideas, expand possibilities, and bring clarity to decisions that can otherwise feel overwhelming.
There is also the belief that interior design is simply about decoration—choosing colors, pillows, and furniture. In truth, design is far more comprehensive. It involves understanding scale, proportion, spatial planning, lighting, materials, and how a home functions on a daily basis. We consider how rooms flow together, how natural light moves through a space, and how each element contributes to an overall sense of harmony.
So whether you are choosing a pillow or building a home, sometimes another voice of experience can be reassuring. We often tell our customers who consider a piece of furniture or new throws to show us a photo of the living space. It opens up a dialog where we can understand how the space is used, why it’s important, and what the goal is. From here we discuss options and the interesting thing is, when the original selection is validated by alternatives, our customer confidence soars with their decision.
Ultimately, working with a designer is less about luxury for its own sake and more about intention—bringing expertise, creativity, and perspective to the process of creating a home that truly reflects the people who live there, their personality and their lifestyle.
We believe great design, like great music, is always better with collaboration.
