Refreshing Your Home for Spring

As the late winter chill fades from North Carolina, it is finally time to enjoy the warmer days of spring. After months of keeping our homes sealed tight, March is the perfect time to refresh our living spaces. Opening your home starts with your windows—the “eyes” of your house that let in that beautiful Carolina sunshine.

Here is how you can prepare your windows to welcome the warmer weather.

Gather Your Supplies

You don’t need a cabinet full of harsh chemicals to get a professional clean. In fact, most experts recommend a simple mixture of mild soapy water or a solution of one part white vinegar to one part water. Avoid using solvents or abrasive pads, as they can damage your windows’ finish. For the best results, use a microfiber cloth or a clean t-shirt rather than paper towels, which can leave dust and streaks behind.

Care for the Frames and Tracks

Before you wash the glass, start with the frames. Use a soft, dry cloth or a vacuum attachment to remove any loose dirt or cobwebs. Once the debris is gone, wipe the frames down with mild soapy water. Don’t forget to wipe out the tracks at the bottom of the window; keeping these clear ensures your windows will glide open easily to catch those first spring breezes.

The Secret to Streak-Free Glass

The best time to clean your windows isn’t actually on a bright, sunny day! If it is too hot or sunny, your cleaning solution may dry too quickly, leaving behind smudges. Aim for a cloudy day or early in the morning. Work in a circular motion from the top down, and dry the glass immediately with a clean cloth or a squeegee to lock in that crystal-clear view.

Refreshing Your Screens

Spring in the Carolinas often brings a heavy layer of pollen. If you have standard aluminum screens, you can gently spray them with a garden hose on a low-pressure setting. However, if your home has high-visibility or fine-mesh screens, it is often best to skip the water. These delicate screens are best cleaned with a simple duster or a soft, dry cloth. This removes pollen and dust without risking bending the fine mesh or trapping mud in the small openings.

Taking a little time now to care for your windows ensures your home is bright, inviting and ready for the beautiful spring ahead.
