Our nation marks a solemn and joyful milestone—250 years of freedom as a nation. As citizens gather to celebrate this quarter-millennium, it is fitting to reflect on the moral and spiritual roots that have shaped our public life. From our earliest founding documents to the actions that sustain communities, the influence of biblical teaching has been a steady current. Scripture reminds us, “For freedom Christ has set us free; stand firm therefore, and do not submit again to a yoke of bondage” (Galatians 5:1). That declaration of liberty is grounded in divine truth.

The phrase “In God We Trust” placed on our currency, and embossed on in halls of our civic buildings, is the wellspring of our freedoms. It rests not only in human abilities but rather a moral order from above.

When a society severs the Bible from its foundations, it risks losing its way. The scriptures give us a call of justice that honors the vulnerable, a call to truthfulness that supports honest discourse, and a call to mercy that undergirds charitable institutions. These virtues—rooted in biblical teaching—give us the framework for our laws, guide our courts, and inspire everyday citizens to serve.

Celebrating 250 years brings both gratitude and a spirit of recommitment to these virtues. Gratitude for the sacrifices of those who pursued liberty. Gratitude for generations of citizens who have kept these virtues in high regard; and a recommitment to cultivate the character that freedom requires. Freedom flourishes when our foundation is solid. The Bible must be that foundation.

As we mark 250 years, let us give thanks, remember our foundation, and recommit to stewarding freedom with justice and compassion. May the motto “In God We Trust” prompt not mere words but a renewed devotion to the moral truths that sustain a free and flourishing republic.

In celebration of our 250th year, our church is hosting “Church In the Park” on July 5th at 10:30a at Metzger Park. Join us as we celebrate our nation, worship our Lord and enjoy a Church picnic together.
