One of my favorite things each week is spending time with the children in our church. Kids have a way of asking honest questions and seeing Biblical truths with fresh eyes. Recently, we talked about Noah—not just the ark, the animals, or the flood, but what made Noah different from everyone else around him.
Genesis tells us that the world Noah lived in was filled with wickedness. People ignored God and lived however they wanted. Yet, in the middle of all that darkness, one simple phrase stands out: “Noah walked with God” (Genesis 6:9, ESV).
I love that picture.
Walking with someone isn’t something you do once. It’s a daily choice. You spend time together. You listen. You trust the one leading the way. That’s exactly what Noah did. Even when everyone around him thought he was foolish, he chose obedience over popularity. He trusted God when His instructions didn’t make sense to anyone else.
I often wonder if our world isn’t so different.
Our children are growing up in a culture that constantly tells them to follow their own hearts, fit in, and do whatever feels right. As parents and grandparents, we have the incredible privilege—and responsibility—of teaching them that there is a better way. We can teach them what it looks like to walk with God every single day.
Walking with God isn’t about being perfect. It’s about choosing Him in the everyday moments. It’s telling the truth when it’s hard. It’s showing kindness when others are unkind. It’s forgiving instead of holding a grudge. It’s obeying God’s Word even when no one else around us is.
One of the verses we shared with our children comes from Micah 6:8: “He has told you, O man, what is good; and what does the LORD require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?” (ESV).
What a beautiful picture of the Christian life.
Imagine how different our homes, our schools, our workplaces, and even our community would look if each of us intentionally lived out those three simple commands: do what is right, love mercy, and walk humbly with God.
Noah never knew that his faithfulness would become one of the most well-known stories in history. He simply obeyed God one step at a time. The same is true for us. We may never build an ark, but every day we have opportunities to choose faithfulness. Our children are watching. Our neighbors are watching. More importantly, God sees every step.
May we be known as people who walk with God—not because it’s the easiest path, but because it’s the best one.
