Finding the perfect chair can be surprisingly difficult. Chairs aren’t one-size-fits-all. When choosing a chair, you have to ask, “What is the purpose of this chair?” Is it designed for comfort or style? Is it for the living room, the bedroom, or the office? Maybe it’s a recliner for relaxing and watching the game.
Chairs serve different purposes for different needs.
But what if there are also spiritual chairs that we sit in?
Each chair represents a different response to God. Each one reveals something about where we are in our walk with Him—and each one gives us an opportunity to take another step toward His will for our lives.
So let me ask you a question:
What “yes” is God asking of you that you haven’t said yes to yet? What chair are you sitting in?
Throughout Scripture, God repeatedly called ordinary people to do extraordinary things. Noah was asked to build. Abraham was asked to go. Moses was asked to lead. Isaiah was asked, “Whom shall I send?” His response was simple: “Here am I; send me.”
The question for us is the same: What chair are you sitting in?
Maybe you are sitting in the comfortable chair. You enjoy your life, your routine, and your church, but you don’t want anything to disrupt your comfort. The problem is that comfort can become more important than calling.
Maybe you are sitting in the critic’s chair. You know more needs to be done, but instead of asking, “How can I help?” you find yourself asking, “Why aren’t they doing this differently?” It is always easier to criticize than to participate.
Perhaps you are in the curious chair. You are beginning to ask questions: “What does God want from me? How can I serve? How can I be part of what God is doing?” Curiosity can be the beginning of spiritual movement.
Then there is the convicted chair. You know what God is asking of you, but you haven’t acted yet. The Holy Spirit has been speaking, and you know it. Now the question is simple: Will I obey?
Next comes the compassionate chair. Your focus begins to shift from yourself to others. You start seeing people the way Jesus sees them—people who need hope, love, and the Gospel. Compassion moves us to pray, give, serve, and go.
Finally, there is the convinced chair. This is where we settle the question and say, “Whatever God asks, my answer is yes.” We may not all give the same amount, serve in the same way, or go to the same place, but we can all be obedient to what God asks of us.
So, what chair are you sitting in, and what is your next “yes” to God? Maybe God is asking you to trust Him for salvation. Maybe He is asking you to serve, witness, give, pray, or go. Whatever it is, don’t stay in the chair of hesitation. Move to the next chair.
God is still looking for ordinary people who are willing to say: “Here am I. Send me.”
