Summer is here, and for many of us in the Fairway area, that means road trips, weekend getaways, and long-awaited vacations. If your pet is coming along for the ride – and why wouldn’t they be? – a little preparation goes a long way toward making the trip enjoyable for everyone in the car.

Start with a wellness visit before you go.

Before you load up the car, schedule a quick check-in with your veterinarian. This is especially important if your pet hasn’t been seen in a while, or if you’re crossing state lines and may need documentation of vaccinations. Your vet can also make sure your pet is up to date on flea, tick, and heartworm prevention – because wherever summer takes you, parasites are likely already there waiting.

Keep them cool and comfortable on the road.

Pets can overheat faster than you might expect, especially in a warm car. Never leave your pet unattended in a parked vehicle, even with the windows cracked – temperatures inside a car can climb dangerously high within minutes. On long drives, plan for regular stops so your pet can stretch, use the bathroom, and get a drink of fresh water. Bring more water than you think you’ll need, and try to keep a familiar blanket or toy nearby to help your pet feel settled in an unfamiliar environment.

Think about how your pet travels.

Some pets are seasoned road warriors. Others get anxious or carsick the moment the engine turns on. If your pet tends to struggle with travel, talk to your veterinarian ahead of time – there are safe, effective options to help manage anxiety and nausea so your pet isn’t miserable for hours on end. A properly sized crate or a pet-specific seatbelt harness also adds a layer of safety for both your pet and everyone else in the vehicle.

Don’t forget identification.

Even the most well-behaved pet can bolt in an unfamiliar place. Make sure your pet’s collar tags are current with your phone number, and if they aren’t already microchipped, summer travel season is the perfect nudge to get that done. Microchipping is a quick, affordable procedure that gives you peace of mind no matter where your adventures take you.

Traveling with your pet can be one of the most rewarding parts of summer – there’s nothing quite like watching your dog discover a new trail or feel a lake breeze for the first time. With a little planning and a pre-travel wellness visit, you and your pet can head into the season ready for anything.
