Is Your AC Ready for a Kansas City Summer?

If you live in Fairway or Mission Hills, you already know what’s coming. Kansas City summers don’t ease in gently – they arrive fast and stay hot. And in neighborhoods like these, where older homes sit alongside beautifully updated properties, your cooling system deserves some attention before the heat index climbs past 100.

Here’s something I see every summer without fail: a homeowner calls us in late July, miserable, because their AC stopped keeping up. Nine times out of ten, a simple tune-up in May or early June would have caught the problem before it became an emergency. By the time temperatures peak, HVAC technicians across the metro are booked out for days. A little prevention now saves a lot of discomfort later.

So what should you actually do before summer hits full stride?

Schedule a maintenance visit. A professional tune-up isn’t just about cleaning coils – it’s a full system check. We look at refrigerant levels, electrical connections, the condensate drain, and how efficiently your system is actually running. An AC that’s low on refrigerant or has a failing capacitor may cool your home adequately on a mild day and fail completely on the hottest one.

Check your airflow. Replace your filter if you haven’t recently, and walk through your home to make sure supply and return vents aren’t blocked by furniture or rugs. Restricted airflow makes your system work harder and shortens its lifespan.

Think about your thermostat. If you’re still using a basic programmable thermostat – or worse, a manual one – you’re likely spending more than you need to on cooling. A smart thermostat learns your schedule, adjusts automatically, and can be controlled remotely so you’re not cooling an empty house all day.

Know your system’s age. If your AC is 12 to 15 years old and has needed repairs in the last couple of seasons, it’s worth having an honest conversation about replacement. Today’s high-efficiency systems can significantly reduce your energy bills, and current financing options make upgrades more accessible than ever.

Fairway and Mission Hills are great places to live, and with the right preparation, your home can stay that way all summer long. Don’t wait for a breakdown to find out where your system stands.
