Keep Your A/C Running Strong This Florida Summer

Florida summers are no joke. Between the heat, humidity, and long cooling cycles, your air conditioning system works overtime this time of year. In fact, many systems in Lake County run nearly nonstop during June, July, and August. The good news? A few simple maintenance habits can help your system run more efficiently, lower energy bills, and help prevent costly breakdowns during the hottest days of the year.

One of the biggest reasons homeowners experience A/C problems in the summer is restricted airflow. Your system needs proper airflow to cool your home effectively, and something as simple as a dirty filter can cause major strain on the unit. We recommend checking your filter every 30 days during peak summer months. If it looks dirty, replace it. This small step alone can improve airflow, help indoor air quality, and reduce wear and tear on your system.

Another easy thing homeowners can do is keep the outdoor unit clear of debris. Grass clippings, leaves, weeds, and even overgrown bushes can block airflow around the condenser. Make sure there’s at least two feet of clear space around the outdoor unit so it can properly release heat.

Here are a few additional homeowner tips to help your system stay healthy this summer:

  • Keep all air vents open and unblocked by furniture or curtains
  • Pour a small amount of vinegar down your A/C drain line monthly to help prevent clogs
  • Set your thermostat to a consistent temperature instead of constantly adjusting it
  • Close blinds or curtains during the hottest part of the afternoon to reduce heat inside the home
  • Listen for unusual noises or weak airflow, small warning signs can turn into major repairs if ignored

One thing many homeowners don’t realize is that your air conditioner also removes humidity from the air. When systems struggle, homes can start to feel sticky or uncomfortable even if the temperature seems cool. Routine maintenance helps keep both temperature and humidity under control.

At Bob’s AC, we always remind homeowners that preventative maintenance is much less expensive than emergency repairs or premature system replacement. A professional maintenance visit allows technicians to inspect electrical components, refrigerant levels, drain lines, airflow, and system performance before problems become bigger issues.

If your system is over 10–15 years old, making unusual noises, or struggling to keep up with the heat, it may be time to have it evaluated by a professional.

From all of us at Bob’s AC, stay cool this summer and remember, changing your filter is one of the easiest ways to love your A/C system back.
