Protecting Pets During Pyrotechnics

Fireworks can be exciting for people, but they are often stressful and frightening for pets. Dogs and cats have much more sensitive hearing than humans, making loud booms and flashing lights overwhelming. Many pets show signs of anxiety during fireworks, including shaking, hiding, pacing, barking, panting, or trying to escape.

One of the best ways to help pets stay calm is by creating a safe and quiet space indoors before the fireworks begin. A comfortable room with blankets, favorite toys, treats, and calming background noise like music or television can help reduce stress. Closing curtains and blinds may also help block flashing lights and outside stimulation.

Pet owners should remain calm and reassuring, as animals can pick up on human emotions. Keeping a normal routine and speaking softly can help pets feel more secure. Extra exercise earlier in the day can also help dogs release nervous energy and relax more easily later in the evening.

It is important to keep pets safely indoors during fireworks, even if they normally spend time outside. Fear can cause pets to panic, run away, or escape fenced areas. Ensuring pets have updated ID tags and microchip information is also recommended.

Some pets may benefit from calming products such as anxiety vests, pheromone diffusers, calming chews, or veterinarian-approved medications for severe anxiety. Punishment should never be used, as it can increase fear and stress.

With preparation, patience, and comfort, pet owners can help make fireworks season much less stressful and keep their furry family members feeling safe and secure.
