Diamonds are a popular stone for many reasons including their hardness, quality and value, but many people wonder “what are other good stones to invest in?”. My immediate response to that is always Ruby and Sapphires!

Ruby is the birthstone for July and sapphire is the birthstone for September, but most people wear them for their beauty and durability more so than just for the month they represent. Sapphires have become a popular alternative stone for engagement rings or even serve as a popular accent to diamonds in engagement rings.

Fun fact: both sapphire and ruby are made of corundum, a very hard and durable natural mineral that rates a 9 on the Mohs Scale of hardness, making these stones a great option for everyday wear. Sapphire comes in every color EXCEPT red, because when it’s red it’s called a ruby. When referring to a “sapphire” it is known that you are talking about a blue sapphire without saying the actual color. When a sapphire comes in other colors you would then add the color in front, for example a “yellow sapphire”.

Rubies and Sapphires are not only hard but they come in a variety of qualities, including a wide range of clarities, hues and shades- just like diamonds! Also like diamonds, they do hold their value. Rubies of the same size and quality are almost always more expensive than sapphires of equal size and quality. When purchasing rubies and sapphires it’s important to make sure you get an appraisal by a GIA Graduate Gemologist, which will be accepted by all insurance companies.
