Beyond the Quote: Why the Contractor-Client Relationship Is Your Best Investment

  • Copied!

When homeowners compare renovation quotes, the lowest number often looks like the safest choice. In my experience, the gap between quotes rarely comes down to materials. It comes down to planning and communication, and that gap can cost you months.

A returning client recently told me his son hired a different contractor for a bathroom remodel after getting a lower quote than mine. The work itself wasn’t bad. But what should have been a three to four week project stretched to three and a half months. For a household with one bathroom, that’s not an inconvenience. That’s three and a half months of disruption to daily life.

This is the part of a renovation most homeowners never see priced into a quote: the planning that happens before a single wall comes down. At BB Carpentry, we operate under what we call the Complete Renovation Standard, a framework built around one core idea: no decision should be made for the first time during construction. Every material, fixture, and sequencing detail gets resolved before demolition starts, so the crew isn’t waiting on decisions, deliveries, or design changes mid-project.

The other half of that gap is communication. A job can stall for days waiting on an answer to a question that should have been asked, and answered, weeks earlier. Under our standard, clients get a weekly update without exception, and any unexpected issue gets flagged the same day it’s found, along with a proposed solution.

A lower price can mean a lower cost for materials and labour. It can also mean a less defined process, and an undefined process tends to show up later as delays, change orders, or both.

When you’re comparing quotes, ask what each contractor’s planning and communication process actually looks like. The cheapest number on paper isn’t always the cheapest project once you account for your time, and your patience.
