At certain times of year, many people develop cough, congestion, sore throat, fatigue, or headaches and are left wondering: Is this allergies, a common cold, influenza, or COVID?
The truth is that symptoms can overlap, which is why it is not always easy to tell. Allergies often cause itchy eyes, sneezing, and clear runny nose, but usually do not cause fever. A cold tends to come on gradually and often includes congestion, sore throat, and mild fatigue. Influenza usually hits harder and faster, often with fever, body aches, chills, and significant tiredness. COVID can vary widely, from mild cold-like symptoms to fever, fatigue, cough, and sometimes loss of taste or smell, though not everyone experiences the same signs.
What matters most is not trying to guess perfectly, but knowing when extra caution is needed. People who are older, pregnant, immunocompromised, or living with chronic medical conditions may need earlier assessment, especially if symptoms are getting worse instead of better.
It is also important to know when to seek care urgently. Trouble breathing, chest pain, confusion, dehydration, or symptoms that are severe or rapidly worsening should not be ignored.
A pharmacist can often help patients sort through symptoms, recommend appropriate over- the-counter treatment, and advise when testing, medical assessment, or prescription therapy may be worth considering. Just as importantly, pharmacists can help patients avoid taking unnecessary products that may not help and may even worsen certain symptoms. Sometimes reassurance is enough. Other times, early guidance can prevent a more serious problem. Knowing the difference starts with asking the right questions.
