I’ve been grooming dogs for over 15 years. In that time, I’ve worked with thousands of dogs — nervous puppies on their very first visit, seniors who need extra patience, and everything in between. One thing I know for certain: dogs are incredibly honest. They don’t tell us how they feel with words, but they show us through their body language and the trust they build over time. Once you know what to look for, the answer to ‘does my dog actually like their groomer?’ is usually right in front of you.
The First Visit Isn’t the Whole Story
It’s completely normal for a dog to be unsure during their first grooming appointment. A new building, unfamiliar smells, sounds, and people — that’s a lot to take in. Some dogs hesitate or stay close to their owner. That doesn’t mean they’re scared of the groomer. It means they’re adjusting to a new place.
What matters is the trajectory. Over the next few visits, watch for small changes — more confidence at the door, sniffing around instead of freezing, maybe even pulling toward the grooming area. Those moments are signs that trust is growing. It isn’t built in one appointment. It’s earned over time.
A Good Groomer Earns Trust
At Dapper Dogs, I believe every appointment starts before the first brush touches the coat. I greet each dog, let them sniff, and allow them to settle at their own pace. Grooming involves handling areas dogs naturally protect — paws, face, ears, tail. A good groomer doesn’t force a dog through those moments. We slow down, work patiently, and build confidence throughout.
Watch your dog at pick-up. If they glance back at the groomer, wag their tail, or happily acknowledge them before leaving — those are signs a positive relationship is forming. Dogs don’t pretend to trust people. They either do or they don’t.
The Relationship Matters Most
Every dog is different. Some trust you immediately. Some need several visits before they truly relax. One of the most rewarding parts of my job is watching a nervous dog slowly gain confidence until they walk through the door with a wagging tail. That’s not luck — that’s trust. Isaac is an amazing groomer and the staff at Dapper Dogs are all so caring and thoughtful. They truly love dogs and their work is top notch. I have a woolly Alaskan Malamute – not an easy type of dog to groom. Isaac has worked with my dog so that he isn’t scared of getting groomed, and has the patience to maintain his undercoat so that his fur remains healthy.
