The Top 7 Air Conditioning Mistakes Oklahoma Homeowners Make (And How to Avoid Them)

After more than 35 years in the HVAC industry, I’ve learned that most expensive air  conditioning repairs begin as small maintenance issues. The good news is that many of  them are completely preventable. Here are the seven most common mistakes I see every  Oklahoma summer—and how you can avoid them.

  1. Not Changing Your Air Filter

A dirty filter restricts airflow, makes your system work harder, raises energy bills, and can  even lead to a frozen evaporator coil. Check your filter every month and replace it every 1–3  months.

  1. Closing Too Many Supply Vents

Closing vents increases static pressure and can reduce efficiency while putting unnecessary  strain on your system. Keep vents open unless a professional recommends otherwise.

  1. Setting the Thermostat Too Low

Setting your thermostat to 65° won’t cool your home faster. It simply causes the system to  run longer. Choose a comfortable setting, usually 74–78 degrees during summer.

  1. Ignoring Strange Noises

Grinding, squealing, buzzing, or rattling sounds are often early warnings. Fixing a small  problem now can prevent a major repair later.

  1. Skipping Annual Maintenance

Professional maintenance helps catch weak capacitors, dirty coils, refrigerant issues, and  electrical problems before they cause a breakdown.

  1. Neglecting the Outdoor Unit

Grass, weeds, cottonwood, leaves, and debris around the condenser reduce airflow. Keep at  least two feet of clearance around the unit.

  1. Waiting Until It Completely Fails

Many homeowners wait until the hottest day of the year before calling. If your system isn’t  cooling properly, longer run times or higher electric bills are signs it’s time to have it  checked.

The Bottom Line

Your air conditioner is one of the hardest-working appliances in your home. A little  preventative maintenance can improve comfort, lower energy costs, and help avoid

expensive repairs.
