FALL’S RODENT REALITY
As outdoor temperatures begin to decline, mice and other rodents instinctively search for warm, sheltered spaces where they can nest and access food throughout the winter months. Unfortunately, homes, garages, sheds, and commercial buildings often provide the ideal environment.
Many property owners are surprised to learn how little space a mouse needs to gain entry. Small gaps around utility lines, foundation cracks, damaged weather stripping, and openings near doors or windows can all serve as entry points. Once inside, rodents can quickly establish nesting areas in attics, basements, crawl spaces, and wall voids
Fall is often considered the most important time of year for rodent prevention because mice are actively seeking indoor shelter before winter conditions become more severe. Addressing potential entry points now can significantly reduce the likelihood of an infestation later in the season. As in the two photos, the old dryer vent was a major entry point for mice, and we completely changed the vent with a stainless-steel type of vent, and it now is rodent proof.
Beyond being an inconvenience, rodents can create several problems for property owners. Mice are known for their ability to chew through a variety of materials, including insulation, wood, cardboard, and even electrical wiring. This behavior can result in costly repairs and, in some cases, increase fire risks. Rodents can also contaminate food storage areas and leave behind droppings that may pose health concerns.

Fortunately, a proactive approach can help keep homes and businesses protected. Homes and commercial buildings should be inspected at a minimum of yearly for the exterior walls, foundations, and rooflines for any openings or damage. Sealing gaps with appropriate materials, repairing screens, and ensuring doors and windows close tightly are all effective preventive measures. Keeping vegetation trimmed away from structures and reducing outdoor clutter, can and will also make buildings less attractive to rodents seeking shelter.
Inside the home, storing food in sealed containers, cleaning up crumbs promptly, and minimizing accessible nesting materials can further discourage unwanted guests. Regular inspections of attics, basements, and storage areas can help identify early signs of activity before a larger problem develops.
