Shop Smarter Without Sacrificing Quality

As families settle into the busy back-to-school season, saving money at the grocery store becomes more important than ever. But shopping smart doesn’t always mean choosing the least expensive item. True value comes from balancing price, quality, convenience, and how much food actually gets used.

Start by planning several meals around the week’s advertised specials. If chicken, ground beef, or pork is on sale, build more than one meal around it. A package of chicken breasts, for example, can become dinner one evening and provide leftovers for salads, wraps, or lunches the next day.

When comparing products, look at the unit price rather than just the price on the package. A larger size may cost more initially but offer better value per ounce. However, it’s only a bargain if your family can use it before it spoils. Buying the right amount is often more economical than buying the biggest package.

Store brands can also provide significant savings on basics such as canned goods, pasta, baking ingredients, and household supplies. On the other hand, quality is worth prioritizing when freshness, flavor, or performance makes a noticeable difference.

Finally, treat convenience as part of the equation. A prepared entrée, rotisserie chicken, or ready-to-cook meal may cost a little more than cooking completely from scratch, but it can still be less expensive—and healthier—than ordering takeout on a hectic evening.

The smartest grocery shoppers aren’t necessarily the ones who spend the least. They’re the ones who bring home food their families will enjoy, use what they purchase, and get the greatest value from every shopping trip.
