Concealed Carry in North Carolina: Education, Confidence and Responsibility

For many Eastern North Carolina residents, firearm ownership has long been part of hunting, sporting and family traditions. For others, owning a handgun is primarily about personal protection and having another option available to protect themselves and those they love.

For those who have considered carrying a handgun outside the home, obtaining a North Carolina Concealed Handgun Permit can be an important next step. While the permit allows qualified individuals to legally carry a concealed handgun where permitted, the process also provides valuable instruction in firearm safety, North Carolina law and the responsibilities associated with carrying a handgun.

What Does It Take to Get a Concealed Handgun Permit?

North Carolina residents seeking a Concealed Handgun Permit apply through the sheriff’s office in the county where they reside. Applicants must meet the eligibility requirements established by North Carolina law and successfully complete an approved 8-hour concealed handgun training course.

The course combines classroom education with live-fire training. Students receive instruction on firearm safety, North Carolina laws governing concealed handguns and the use of deadly force. They must also demonstrate the safe handling and firing of a handgun.

Carrying a firearm involves much more than knowing how to shoot. Permit holders need to understand where concealed handguns may and may not be carried, the laws surrounding the use of a firearm for self-defense, and the responsibilities that accompany carrying in public.

After successfully completing the course, students receive documentation of their training and can begin the application process through their county sheriff’s office.

Completing the course does not automatically result in a permit; applicants must still complete the required application process and meet the qualifications established by the state.

Why Get Your Concealed Handgun Permit?

For many people, the most obvious benefit is having the option to legally carry a concealed handgun for personal protection in locations where doing so is permitted.

The benefits, however, extend beyond carrying concealed. The required course gives firearm owners an opportunity to become more familiar with laws that directly affect them. Even someone who does not intend to carry every day can benefit from a better understanding of when and where a handgun may legally be carried and the laws surrounding self-defense.

For newer handgun owners, the combination of classroom and range instruction provides valuable hands-on experience. More experienced shooters can use the course as a refresher while gaining information specific to concealed carry.

Another advantage is reciprocity. A North Carolina Concealed Handgun Permit is recognized by a number of other states, providing permit holders additional options for lawful concealed carry while traveling. Laws and restrictions vary considerably from state to state, however, so travelers should always verify the current requirements of each state before carrying a firearm across state lines.

North Carolina concealed handgun permits are generally valid for five years. Because firearm laws can change, staying informed is an ongoing part of carrying concealed.

Your Permit Should Be the Beginning, Not the End

Earning a concealed handgun permit is an accomplishment, but it shouldn’t be the last time a firearm owner seeks instruction or spends time at the range.

Regular practice helps maintain accuracy and familiarity with a handgun. Additional instruction can help shooters identify areas for improvement, correct bad habits and become more comfortable with their firearm.

For someone relatively new to shooting, beginner instruction can concentrate on fundamentals such as proper handling and marksmanship. Advanced courses allow experienced shooters to move beyond the basics and continue challenging their abilities.

Ultimately, having a permit and being prepared to carry are not necessarily the same thing. Knowledge, sound judgment and proficiency all play a role in being prepared for the responsibility that comes with concealed carry.
