Here is a riddle for you? Name the kind of bath where you nestle in for an hour, maybe take a brief nap, never remove anything but your shoes and when you leave you feel lighter and totally zen? Hint: It’s not a bubble bath. It’s a sound bath!
Sound baths are not your typical every day run of the mill bath. Both have very similar things in common, for both you lie down and both are meant to relax you. In a regular bath, ripples of water gently wash over you to relax you and get your body clean. In a sound bath, ripples of sound and vibration ripple over you to relax you and reset your nervous system. Both are very relaxing but with a sound bath your body never gets pruny!
So exactly what is a sound bath? Rather than using the element of water for relaxation, the elements of sound and vibration are used. To produce the sound and vibration instruments like singing bowls, gongs, chimes and bells are used. When paired together in the right protocol, these tools allow you to enter a deeply restorative state. Many people fall asleep, some people feel as if they floated off somewhere. Everyone leaves feeling relaxed and lighter and who doesn’t want to feel relaxed and lighter? Is your curiosity piqued yet? Let’s dive in (not literally) and see what a sound bath looks like.
Imagine walking into a dimly lit room with candles and soft music playing. You are warmly greeted by a friendly sound practitioner. You have your favorite blanket, pillow and if you are hippie dippy…maybe a crystal to calm your mind. In the corner of the room, you see a grouping of instruments made up mostly of bowls. Yoga mats are laid out representing “your tub” or your personal space. You take a few minutes to set up your space…some people call it feathering your nest. It’s time for the bath to begin. Your friendly neighborhood sound practitioner instructs you to get comfortable. As you relax into your special nest, and close your eyes you inhale the faint aroma of lavender. You gently exhale and feel your muscles begin to release. The first bowl begins to play. It’s a firm yet direct strike against the bowl followed by a succession of sounds that together create a metaphysical symphony. Your body begins to feel as if it’s becoming one with the mat as the sound and vibration of the instruments bathes you into a deep state of relaxation. During this time, the sound practitioner may come and gently place a bowl on your body to let the sound and vibration resonate directly into your body. It feels like magic as your muscles release and your brain goes into a state of total relaxation.
So what is happening to cause this magical state of bliss? To answer that question, we need to get sciency for a moment. What seems like magic is really sound and vibration. The sound and vibration from the instruments are helping to calm your nervous system and take you from fight or flight (sympathetic nervous system) into a state of deep calm and restoration (parasympathetic nervous system). It is done through a process called entrainment. Entrainment is a foundational concept in physics and acoustics where two vibrating objects sync up and match each other’s rhythm or frequency. When the instrument plays, the sound moves through the air and the ripples hit your body. Our bodies are made up of 60% water. As we know, water is a great conductor of energy. In this case the energy is the sound. Your body slows down and entrains to the frequency of the vibration coming from the sound. Soon your sympathetic nervous system relaxes into the much more beneficial parasympathetic nervous system. At the same time your brain is also entraining to the sound frequency. It switches from beta waves (active thinking) to alpha (meditative) or even theta (deep healing) brain waves. You may feel as if you floated off somewhere or you are half asleep. This is a sign your body has entered a deeply restorative state where healing and repair happens.
Sounds fabulous, doesn’t it? So you may ask yourself, “What are these magical tools that create this metaphysical symphony?” Most sound baths center around a set of singing bowls. There are two main kinds of singing bowls: crystal and metal. You may be wondering, what is the difference between these two very different types of singing bowls? To begin with, obviously they have very different material compositions which leads to very different sound profiles. Crystal singing bowls produce a sharp, expansive, and continuous ring, whereas metal singing bowls deliver a warm, deeply layered, and grounded sound. Both instruments are wonderful additions to a sound practice; choosing between them simply comes down to personal preference. There are a number of other instruments which may accompany the bowls in a sound bath, such as tingsha bells, gongs, ocean drums, rain sticks, tongue drums and chimes. All of these instruments are used very intentionally by the sound practitioner in a special protocol to help bring sound participants into this very relaxed state.
In closing, there’s actually no “magic” required to explain why sound baths work—it’s all pure physics. When specific instruments are played with intention, they produce physical sound vibrations that ripple through your body, automatically helping your nervous system reset and your brain to slow down. It really is that simple!
