There’s something about the end of summer that naturally makes us look at our homes a little differently.
The days begin to get shorter, routines return, and before long, we’ll be spending more time indoors. It’s a wonderful time to take a fresh look at the spaces around us, without necessarily needing to renovate or start over. Sometimes, a few thoughtful changes are all a room needs.
Start With Colour
Colour is one of the easiest ways to shift the feeling of a space, and you don’t have to repaint the walls to make an impact.
A new accent colour introduced through pillows, artwork, accessories or an area rug can completely change the personality of a room. As fall approaches, warmer neutrals, earthy shades and richer accent colours can add depth while still working beautifully with what you already own.
Add Warmth Through Texture
As we move away from summer, I love introducing a little more texture. Lightweight throws and pillows can be replaced with richer fabrics, subtle patterns and softer layers. Woven baskets, wood, ceramics and natural fibres also bring warmth and dimension to a room without making it feel overly “seasonal.”
The goal isn’t necessarily to decorate for fall, but to simply make your home feel a little more inviting as the seasons change.
Look at Your Room With Fresh Eyes
Before buying anything new, try looking at what you already have differently. Could a chair work better in another corner? Would moving the sofa improve the flow of the room? Is there a beautiful piece that has become lost among too many accessories? Sometimes rearranging furniture or editing what’s on display can have just as much impact as adding something new. Move favourite pieces from one room to another, create new groupings, or simply remove a few things and give the room some breathing space.
Don’t Forget the Lighting
As days become shorter, lighting becomes even more important and it has an enormous effect on how a room feels. A combination of overhead, task and accent lighting creates warmth and makes a room more functional. A new table lamp, updated shade or beautiful fixture can also add personality.
Choose Something You Love
If you do decide to introduce something new, make it meaningful. Perhaps it’s a beautiful chair, a piece of artwork, a new rug or an accent table. Rather than buying several things simply because you want a change, choose one piece you truly love and allow it to inspire the room around it.
A Fresh Start Doesn’t Mean Starting Over
One of the things I love about design is that beautiful spaces can evolve.
Your home doesn’t need to be completely redesigned every time your tastes or needs change. Often, the best rooms are created over time by keeping what still works, reimagining what can be used differently, and thoughtfully introducing something new when it feels right.
As we head toward fall, perhaps that’s the perfect approach: look around your home, appreciate what you already love, and consider the small changes that could make it feel fresh again.
Because Living Beautifully isn’t about constantly starting over. It’s about creating a home that continues to feel like you.
