Q&A With a Wrap and Tint Guy: Answers to Common Questions About Paint Protection and Tint

At Alset Auto Richmond, I speak with vehicle owners daily about paint protection film, ceramic coatings, window tint, vinyl wraps, accessories, and full custom or commercial work. The same questions come up repeatedly, so here is what I tell people when I get one of these common queries:

What’s the difference between PPF and ceramic coating?

PPF is a clear, self-healing film that physically protects the paint from rock chips, scratches, and road debris. Ceramic coating is a liquid polymer that bonds to the surface and adds hydrophobic protection, gloss, and easier cleaning. They work best together. Film takes the hits; ceramic makes the surface easier to maintain.

How long does paint protection film last?

Properly installed XPEL PPF has a 10-year warranty with normal care. We see excellent results on daily drivers, weekenders, and track cars alike when the film is washed correctly and not neglected.

Will ceramic coating stop scratches and chips?

No. Ceramic adds chemical resistance and reduces light swirl marks by reducing the need to scrub your paint, but it does not stop rock chips or deeper scratches. That’s the job of PPF. I recommend coating over film or on less vulnerable areas for maximum benefit.

Is window tint legal in Virginia?

Yes, within limits. Front side windows must allow at least 50% light transmission. Rear windows and the back windshield can be darker, however the front windshield requires a medical waiver and has a 70% limit. But never fear, ceramic tint will block heat equally effectively at any transparency. It’s the ceramic content in the film that blocks the sun’s infrared heat while the darkness of the film is only related to visible light.

Can you wrap commercial vehicles and fleet units?

Absolutely. We do full commercial wraps, partial graphics, and color-change work for businesses that want branding that lasts. Vinyl is more cost-effective than a full repaint and can be removed later if needed.

What about Tesla and Cybertruck protection?

We do a lot of them. Full-front and full-body PPF packages are popular because the paint is thin and rock chips show quickly. We also handle ceramic, tint, and accessory installs on these vehicles regularly.

How do I take care of the work after installation?

Wait the recommended curing time before washing. Use pH-neutral soaps, avoid automatic car washes with brushes, and don’t use abrasive polishes on film. Ceramic-coated surfaces just need occasional washing and topper products.

What does a typical job cost?

It depends on the vehicle, coverage area, and product.
