The Best Renovations Start Long Before Construction

When homeowners think about renovating, they often picture the construction itself, with cabinets coming out, walls being opened, new flooring going down, and eventually seeing the finished space come together.

But a successful renovation usually starts well before the first tool comes out. Depending on the size and complexity of your project, beginning the planning process several months before you hope to start construction can make a big difference. If you are thinking about renovating this winter or next spring, fall is a great time to start the conversation.

Start with the big picture

Before getting caught up in colours, fixtures and finishes, think about what you actually want to accomplish. What isn’t working in your current space? What would make it function better for your family? And just as importantly, what are you comfortable investing in the project? Having a realistic scope and budget early helps guide everything that follows.

Allow time for the details

Larger renovations can involve drawings, permits, engineering, product selections, and coordination with multiple trades. Kitchens and bathrooms alone can require decisions on cabinetry, countertops, plumbing fixtures, flooring, tile, lighting, and more. Making those decisions before construction begins allows for better planning and fewer rushed choices along the way.

Remember that materials take time too

Not everything needed for a renovation is sitting on a shelf waiting to be picked up. Cabinets, windows, specialty fixtures, and other products may have lead times of several weeks or longer. Planning ahead gives your contractor time to order and coordinate materials so they’re available when they’re needed.

Good contractors plan ahead

Renovation companies also schedule projects in advance. Waiting until you’re ready for construction to begin before contacting a contractor can mean the timeline you had in mind isn’t available.

Starting the conversation early doesn’t mean construction has to begin right away. It simply gives you time to find the right contractor, understand the process, set a realistic budget, and properly prepare for the project.

The best renovations aren’t rushed into. They’re planned.

If you’re considering a renovation in the coming months, now may be the right time to start putting the pieces together.
