A slow drain is easy to ignore. It backs up a little, you run some hot water or grab a drain snake, and it seems to clear up, at least for now. But a slow drain is rarely a one-time problem. It’s usually a sign of buildup that’s going to keep coming back, and keep getting worse, until it’s dealt with properly.
What a snake actually does. A drain snake punches a hole through a clog. It clears a path so water can get through again, but it doesn’t clean the pipe. Whatever grease, scale, or debris is coating the walls of that line stays right where it is, just with a channel poked through the middle. That’s why the same drain tends to clog again a few weeks or months later.
What jetting actually does. Hydro jetting uses high-pressure water to scour the entire interior of the pipe, not just punch through the blockage. It strips grease, mineral buildup, and debris off the pipe walls completely, restoring the line closer to its original diameter instead of leaving a narrow channel through old buildup. It’s the difference between clearing a path and actually cleaning the road.
Why fall makes this worse. Cooler weather means more cooking at home. More holiday meals, more grease going down kitchen drains, more soups and gravies and fried food that all send fat straight into your plumbing. Grease is liquid when it’s hot and solid once it cools, and it cools fast once it hits your pipes. That’s exactly how slow drains turn into full backups right around the holidays, at the worst possible time to be dealing with a plumbing emergency.
How to know which one you need. If a drain has been slow for a while, has backed up more than once, or serves a kitchen that sees heavy cooking, a snake is a temporary fix at best. Jetting solves the actual problem instead of just buying you a few more weeks.
The bigger picture. Sewer lines that never get properly cleaned accumulate buildup year after year, and eventually that buildup leads to bigger blockages, slower drainage throughout the whole system, and even backups that require far more invasive repairs. A jetting service now, before the holiday cooking season ramps up, is a lot cheaper and a lot less disruptive than an emergency call in December.
If your drains have been sluggish, don’t just keep reaching for the snake. Get the line properly cleaned before it turns into a bigger problem.
