The heart of the home remains one of the most influential features in attracting buyers, according to the National Association of REALTORS®. On Long Island, where buyers often seek move-in-ready homes in a competitive market, a thoughtfully designed kitchen has become more than a luxury—it’s a key selling advantage.
Certainly, John understands the power of well thought out and executed kitchen design. His family has been doing it for more than 90 years. Suzanne agrees: “There are many decisions to be made when redoing a kitchen – deciding where appliances go, countertop and backsplash choices, faucets, flooring, and colors. It’s much more complicated than redoing other rooms. When a buyer sees an updated finished kitchen, they see many less decisions, and perhaps costly ones that they would not need to make, and that’s very appealing to them. Hence, the buyer is more willing to put forth a stronger”
According to both John and Suzanne, here are the most in-demand design elements we see as driving the local real estate market—and trends on Long Island.
Softer hues: “Though white kitchens aren’t disappearing, they’re no longer the automatic first choice”, says Starck. A palette of warm whites and light woods is on trend for feeling bright yet comfortable and inviting. The combination of light oak that adds great texture, with a creamy white cabinetry, for example, exudes a cozy charm that works with a wide variety of accessories and fixtures. In today’s open home plans, a warmer coloration in your kitchen décor blends more seamlessly with the adjoining spaces. “I find that buyers can better envision their own furnishings and style in kitchens that feel more neutral,” Suzanne notes.
Coffee and beverage station: Nothing says luxury lifestyle like convenience. A dedicated coffee station makes for a quick, easy grab-and-go morning routine. According to Suzanne Weis, the one feature Long Island buyers consistently fall in love with. These stations keep countertops clear of coffee makers, work well for entertaining, and let kids reach their favorite drinks easily.
Convenient storage solutions: Today’s home chefs have a multitude of gadgets, implements and serving pieces that they want close at hand, yet tucked away. Simply put, a clever working kitchen with easy to reach, well-integrated storage is highly desirable. Tailoring storage incorporating the total functionality of the kitchen makes sense, and “is a goal we at Showcase Kitchens spends a great deal of time working to achieve” confirms John.
So, whether you’re thinking of selling your home, or are looking for guidance on how to make the most of the busiest room in your home, consider incorporating these kitchen design elements.
