Every election cycle, I hear the same question from voters: How do I know my vote is secure?
It’s a fair question, and one that I welcome.
Elections are not made secure by a single law, or person. Election security is the result of several safeguards that begin long before the first ballot is cast and continue well after the final results are certified. At the Collier County Supervisor of Elections office, protecting the integrity of every election is more than our responsibility—it is the foundation of everything we do.

Securing our Voter Registration
Election security is a year-round effort, and it begins with maintaining accurate voter rolls. Our office conducts daily voter eligibility maintenance in accordance with Florida law. We receive regular updates from state agencies regarding voters who have moved, passed away, or otherwise become ineligible to vote. We also process new registrations and updates every day, ensuring our voter rolls remain as accurate as possible.
Safeguards for Voting by Mail
When it comes to Vote-by-Mail ballots, multiple layers of security protect every ballot requested and tabulated. A voter requesting a ballot must provide personal identifying information before a ballot can be issued. Once completed, every returned ballot envelope undergoes signature verification by trained elections staff. If a signature does not match the voter’s signature on file, the ballot is not simply rejected. Instead, voters are notified and provided an opportunity to cure their ballot by submitting the required affidavit and identification before the statutory deadline. This process protects both ballot security and voters’ rights.

Voting Equipment Testing
The voting equipment itself is also subject to rigorous testing before every election, and in addition, our office conducts a public Logic and Accuracy test. This is not a symbolic exercise, but rather a comprehensive test designed to demonstrate that every voting device accurately reads ballots and tabulates votes exactly as intended. Members of the public, political parties, candidates and the media are invited to observe the process firsthand. Transparency is one of the strongest safeguards we have.
Integrity at the Polls
Securing your vote continues through early voting and Election Day. Every polling place is staffed by trained election workers who complete mandatory training before serving voters. Teams work together throughout the day to ensure election procedures are followed consistently and professionally. Voting equipment and ballots are secured using documented chain-of-custody procedures, tamper-evident seals and strict accountability measures from the time materials leave our office until they are returned after polls close.
Providing Transparency Post-Election
Unofficial results are reported publicly on Election Night, but numerous post-election procedures occur before results are officially certified. Ballots remain securely stored under strict legal requirements, canvassing activities occur in public meetings and Florida law provides opportunities for recounts and post-election audits, when required. These processes exist to verify the accuracy of the election, not because we expect problems, but because public confidence deserves independent verification.

Perhaps the greatest security measure is one many people overlook transparency and trust. We understand that trust cannot simply be requested. It must be earned. That’s why our office regularly hosts educational tours, community presentations and public demonstrations of election equipment. We encourage residents to ask questions, attend public testing events and learn firsthand how elections are administered. The more people understand the process, the more they realize just how many safeguards are already in place.
Every voter deserves confidence that their ballot will be counted accurately and securely. Our staff comes to work every day committed to protecting that confidence through the countless checks, balances and security measures that make up every election we administer. Election integrity isn’t a promise we make every four years. It’s a commitment we uphold every single day.
