A Reason to Give Thanks

Quite a few years ago, I was at Meadows Park with our three children. It was a familiar routine in our house. I’d come home from work and, before or after dinner, take the kids to the park to give Ashley a well-deserved break from the day.

On one particular afternoon, I was helping Parker down the slide, pushing Rheagan on the swings, and keeping a close eye on Danny, who seemed determined to make his way straight to the pond.

Many of you remember those days when your children, and now perhaps your grandchildren, were young. It took a lot of energy to make sure everyone was having fun while also staying safe. Looking back now, those years seem to have passed in the blink of an eye. What felt like ordinary days at the time have become some of life’s most treasured memories.

During one of those trips to the park, a longtime Trent Woods resident who had been watching the scene smiled and commented on how blessed I was. At the time, with three young children running in different directions, I was thinking more about how useful it would be to clone myself than how fortunate I was. But as the years have passed, I’ve come to better understand what she meant.

Her comment came back to me recently as I reflected on another milestone. This year marks the 250th anniversary of our nation’s founding, and it has prompted many of us to look back and appreciate the people and events that shaped the country we enjoy today. Through documentaries, podcasts, and stories about the American Revolution and our Founding Fathers, I’ve been reminded that gratitude often comes from taking time to reflect.

Was everything perfect 250 years ago? Certainly not. Is everything perfect today? Of course not.

Yet when we step back and look at the bigger picture, we can be thankful for the blessings we often take for granted. I know I am grateful to call Trent Woods home and to have raised our family here. Whenever Ashley and I travel, we enjoy our time away but always look forward to coming home. There is something special about living in a community where you know your neighbors, wave to friends as you pass by, and regularly run into familiar faces at the grocery store, local restaurants, or around town.

Those connections are easy to overlook in the busyness of everyday life, but they are a big part of what makes Trent Woods such a wonderful place to call home.

As Thanksgiving approaches, I encourage all of us to take time to reflect on the many blessings in our lives. Let the people who matter most know how much you appreciate them. Think about the memories you’ve made together and look forward to creating many more in the years ahead.

Thank you for helping make Trent Woods the special community that it is.  I wish you and your family a happy Thanksgiving filled with gratitude, friendship, and the blessings of home.

Happy Thanksgiving!
