Don’t Just Get Through Winter — Thrive Through It

In Park City, we know how to prepare for winter. We tune our skis, wax our boards, stock the pantry and pull the layers out of storage. But there is another kind of preparation we tend to overlook: preparing our bodies for months of shorter days, less exposure to natural light, demanding activity and recovery.

I became fascinated with photobiomodulation—the therapeutic use of specific wavelengths of light—in 2018. What began as curiosity during an advanced course eventually became something much more personal to my practice. I began using a 1064 nm Nd:YAG laser for targeted photobiomodulation and was repeatedly impressed by what I saw: meaningful support for recovery, comfort and tissue health that seemed disproportionate to how simple the treatment felt.

It made me wonder: If targeted light could do this, what could carefully delivered light do for the whole body?

That question ultimately led me to invest in a full-body photobiomodulation system, the TheraLight 360.

The science behind photobiomodulation is fascinating without being complicated. Certain wavelengths of light can interact with cells and, particularly through effects involving the mitochondria, influence cellular energy production and signaling. Research has explored applications ranging from exercise recovery and inflammation to sleep, mood, circulation, cognitive health and healthy aging.

For someone living an active Park City life, the practical appeal is equally compelling. You don’t have to add another complicated ritual to your day. The TheraLight 360 is comfortable, doesn’t heat you up or make you sweat, and a session takes about fifteen minutes. Many people use it several times a week; some use it daily.

And consistency matters.

I often tell patients that wellness is less about finding one extraordinary thing and more about creating an environment in which your body has the resources to do what it was designed to do. Light is one of those resources.

I’ve also become increasingly interested in the relationship between vitality and appearance. Patients sometimes tell me that after regularly using photobiomodulation, people have commented that they look unusually rested. I’ve even heard of a client being asked whether she’d had a cosmetic procedure because she looked noticeably more youthful. She attributed the change to her regular full-body light therapy. An anecdote isn’t evidence, and I would never promise that outcome, but it illustrates why I’m interested in the relationship between healthy, well-supported tissue and what we see on the outside.

As winter arrives, perhaps the goal shouldn’t be to simply tolerate the darker months until spring.

Perhaps it’s to use the season as an opportunity to recover better, sleep better, move better and feel more like yourself.

That is what vitality means to me: not simply adding years to life, but supporting the ability to fully live the years we have.

The TheraLight Unlimited Membership provides unlimited fifteen-minute full-body sessions Monday–Friday during business hours, year-round. Many members incorporate light therapy into their routine several times a week—making it less of an occasional treatment and more of a simple, consistent wellness practice.
