Have you ever woken up with your mouth feeling like a desert? An occasional dry mouth is common, but when it happens frequently, it can be more than uncomfortable—it can affect the health of your teeth and gums.
Saliva is one of your mouth’s most important natural defenses. It washes away food particles, helps neutralize acids produced by bacteria, and provides minerals that protect tooth enamel. When we don’t produce enough saliva, our teeth lose some of this natural protection, increasing the risk of cavities, bad breath, tooth sensitivity, and other oral health problems.
Why Does Dry Mouth Happen?
Medications are one of the most common causes. Many medications used for allergies, blood pressure, anxiety, depression, and pain can reduce saliva production. Dehydration, mouth breathing, smoking, alcohol, certain medical conditions, and medical treatments can also contribute. Dry mouth may become more common as we age, often because of increased medication use.
What Can You Do?
- Stay hydrated. Sip water regularly throughout the day.
- Stimulate your saliva. Sugar-free gum or products containing xylitol can help encourage saliva production.
- Limit acidic drinks. Frequently sipping soda, juice, sports drinks, or other acidic beverages can create a more acidic environment in your mouth and increase the risk of enamel damage.
- Choose your oral-care products carefully. Consider toothpastes and mouth rinses formulated to support a less acidic oral environment. Products containing fluoride, calcium and phosphate technologies, or nano-hydroxyapatite may also help strengthen and remineralize tooth enamel. Your dentist can recommend products based on your individual needs.
- Keep up with dental visits. Regular examinations can help identify early signs of decay and other problems associated with reduced saliva.
Most importantly, don’t ignore persistent dry mouth. Sometimes the cause is simple, while other times it may be related to medications or an underlying health condition.
Saliva may not get much attention, but it works around the clock to protect your smile. Keeping your mouth hydrated and maintaining a healthy oral environment can help protect your teeth for years to come.
