Get Your Roof Ready Before Winter Hits

November is when fall starts giving way to winter, and our homes begin preparing for what’s ahead. We think about heating systems, cleaning out the gutters, and buttoning up windows and doors, but there’s another important item that deserves a spot on the list: getting your roof ready for winter.

A roof does a lot of heavy lifting during the colder months. Snow, ice, freezing rain, and repeated freeze-thaw cycles can put stress on even a well-maintained roof. A loose shingle, exposed nail, or small area of worn flashing might not seem like a big deal in November, but once winter weather arrives, those small issues can turn into leaks or water damage.

That’s why a little preparation now can go a long way toward avoiding a much bigger headache later.

When Winter Weather Becomes a Problem

New Jersey winters can bring heavy snow, freezing rain, ice, and temperatures that bounce above and below freezing. That combination can be especially hard on your roof.

One of the biggest concerns is ice damming. When snow melts on a warmer portion of the roof and refreezes along the colder edges, ice can build up and block normal drainage. As water backs up behind the ice, it can find its way underneath shingles and into areas where it doesn’t belong.

Last winter, we saw just how quickly ice damming can become a serious problem. Blue Nail received an unusually high number of calls related to ice dams, including emergency situations involving active leaks and significant roof damage. In some cases, the effects continued well beyond winter, which is why we recommend having your roof inspected both before and after the season, especially if it is approaching the end of its expected lifespan.

Ice dams aren’t the only concern. Heavy snow adds weight to the roof, while repeated freezing and thawing can cause materials to expand and contract. Over time, that can put additional stress on shingles, flashing, gutters, and other components.

A Little Preparation Goes a Long Way

Think of a seasonal roof tuneup like a checkup before the season changes. An inspection can identify early signs of wear, check that flashing and other vulnerable areas are secure, and uncover minor issues before snow and ice put them to the test.

At Blue Nail Exteriors, our Roof TuneUp Special goes beyond what is typically included in a standard appointment. It includes a full inspection along with sealing, tightening, and minor repairs. Through the end of November, homeowners can take advantage of the tuneup for $250, a $650 value.

Whether you schedule a professional inspection or simply take time to look for visible signs of wear, November is a smart time to make sure your roof is ready for the season ahead. A little attention now can help you head into winter with fewer surprises when the temperatures drop.
