The Innovative School of Temple Beth Sholom is a thriving two-month-fifth grade educational venue of excellence which focuses on high-level teaching and learning with joy and is inspired by the Reggio Approach. This approach is a relationship-centered environment that cultivates engagement, which we know leads to stronger retention of information, and a more joyful environment. Learners acquire 21st century skills through “real world” experience. These skills include agency, creativity, empathy, collaboration, leadership, and sustained focus.
Our KEHILLA Approach™ is our value system that defines how we live and learn within our Innovative School learning community. For us, KEHILLA stands for Kindness, Empathy, Honesty, Integrity, Lifelong Learning, and Acceptance
At the Innovative School, we believe:
- School should be a place for learning how to live and for being a productive member of a community.
- Our curriculum is anchored in meaningful, real-world experiences, that authentically promote collaboration, critical thinking, communication, inquiry, and creative expression.
- Our learners become co-constructors of their learning. Process is viewed as essential to this approach.
- Classroom community is developed and strengthened through meetings and discussions where learners witness, firsthand, the value of multiple perspectives.
- Families are essential partners throughout their children’s educational journey.
Our Framework for the Future defines our graduate outcomes in our Learner Portrait. When our learners graduate from the Innovative school, they will be empowered learners, empathetic citizens, constructive collaborators, effective communicators, and creative problem-solvers.
Empowered Learners maximize their potential by leading with purpose, embracing challenges, and being resilient. Learners demonstrate mastery of core knowledge, concepts, skills, and dispositions and meet and exceed grade-level milestones. Creative Problem-Solvers approach learning opportunities with curiosity, creativity, and innovative thinking. Effective Communicators actively listen and strive to understand others and seek to be understood. Constructive Collaborators work with others in a positive and helpful way to achieve a common goal. Empathetic Citizens are changemakers who have a positive impact on their local and global community by modeling Jewish and shared values.
Our world-class team of educators is intentional in designing a curriculum. Through ongoing observation and competency-based assessments, learners demonstrate their academic proficiency and engage in the practice of feedback. Educators create the conditions that produce the outcomes of the Learner Portrait. These include offering learning experiences that are personalized, authentic, competency-based, and inclusive.
Our learners know who they are, thrive in community and actively engage in the world as their best selves. Our educational environments motivate learners to grow and develop in an endless pursuit of wonder, meaning making, and knowledge. Our approach to education cultivates the cognitive, emotional, and interpersonal skills needed to succeed in an ever-changing 21st Century.
