Most injuries don’t happen because of one dramatic movement. Often, they build quietly. The way you sit at your desk. How you stand for eight hours at work. The position you repeatedly reach into. The way you bend, lift, walk, train or compensate when something feels stiff.
One repetition may not matter much. But hundreds of repetitions, day after day, can add up. That’s why at COMPHYSIO+ Performance Wellness, we believe one of the most valuable things we can give our clients isn’t simply an exercise program.
It’s better self-awareness.
Learn How Your Body Moves
When you understand how your body is moving, you become much better at recognizing when something changes. Maybe you notice that you consistently shift your weight onto one leg when standing. Perhaps turning your head is easier in one direction. One shoulder may move differently than the other, or your balance suddenly isn’t as good on one side. These observations don’t necessarily mean something is wrong. But they provide information.
Instead of waiting until discomfort becomes significant enough to interfere with work, exercise or daily life, greater body awareness gives you an opportunity to respond earlier. That’s why we don’t just teach our clients what exercises to do. We teach them what they are feeling, what they are looking for and how to self-correct when appropriate.
Scan. Correct. Rescan.
Every client who comes through our clinic is introduced to principles from the SAM Scan — Self-Assessment of Movement.
The SAM Scan teaches simple movement checks that can help you become more aware of things like balance, mobility, coordination and how your body moves from side to side. The concept is simple: SCAN → CORRECT → RESCAN
First, check how you’re moving. If something stands out, apply an appropriate movement or strategy. Then check again. Did it change? This process helps turn movement from something you do unconsciously into something you can actively observe and understand. Over time, that awareness can become incredibly valuable. You may recognize that your neck is getting stiff after several hours at your computer. You may notice your movement changes after repetitive work, a long drive or a hard training session. Instead of repeatedly pushing through those changes, you have the awareness to adjust your position, change the task, move, recover or seek help when needed.
Your Body Is Giving You Information
Pain shouldn’t always be the first signal that makes you pay attention to your body. Learning your normal movement patterns — and recognizing when they change — can help you make better decisions about your movement, training, work and recovery.
At COMPHYSIO+ Performance Wellness, our goal is not simply to get you through today’s injury. We want to give you the knowledge and tools to better understand your body long after you leave the clinic.
Move with greater awareness. Build confidence in your body. And stay doing the things you love.
