Auburn Parks and Recreation: January 2026 Happenings

Back to Articles

The new year brings fresh energy, new opportunities, and plenty of ways to reconnect with your community. As we welcome 2026, Auburn Parks and Recreation has a full month of events designed to inspire creativity, encourage wellness, and bring people together across the city.

January begins with a boost of motivation as Active Auburn invites residents to enjoy a free week-long membership to our fitness centers. From January 5–11, Auburn residents can explore the facilities at Lake Wilmore Park Recreation Center, Frank Brown Recreation Center, and the Boykin Community Center at no cost. Simply register online and show your confirmation receipt upon arrival. Whether you’re starting a new health journey or easing back into familiar routines, Fit Week offers an encouraging way to begin the year feeling strong and supported.

Shortly after Fit Week concludes, photographers from across Alabama and nearby Georgia counties will prepare their submissions for the 2026 Juried Photography Biennial. Entries may be dropped off at the Jan Dempsey Community Arts Center Art Gallery on Wednesday, January 7 between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. The exhibition, which features original photographic works from professional, student, and amateur artists ages 18 and older, will open to the public on January 15 and remain on display through February 26. Guests are invited to celebrate the selected artists at the public awards reception on Thursday, January 22 from 5:30 to 7 p.m.

As the month continues, one of Auburn’s most anticipated winter traditions returns with the 14th Annual Polar Plunge, presented by Auburn Parks and Recreation and Lee County Special Olympics. Community members are invited to gather support for Special Olympics athletes, and prepare to take the icy leap into Samford Pool on Saturday, January 24. Pre-registration is available and encouraged, and all participants must register individually, even if they plan to plunge as part of a group. Those who sign up by January 6 are guaranteed an event T-shirt. Walk-up registration will also be available on the morning of the event. The entry fee is $20, and everyone will plunge together at 9 a.m., with waves added if needed.

From creative expression and community celebration to wellness and winter tradition, January in Auburn is filled with opportunities to learn, explore, and connect. As 2026 begins, we look forward to sharing many more moments of creativity, activity, and community with you.
