When a recently relocated family purchased their Auburn home, they immediately saw its potential. What they envisioned, however, was something brighter, more open, and better suited for gathering with friends and family. To bring that vision to life, they partnered with T. Murphy Construction LLC, a locally owned custom builder and remodeler serving the Auburn-Opelika area.
The homeowners had three priorities: modernize an outdated kitchen, create a more spacious layout for entertaining, and establish distinct focal points in the living area. Achieving those goals required more than cosmetic updates, it demanded thoughtful design and structural expertise.
To open the main living space, the team removed an exterior wall and expanded into a former covered patio under the existing roofline. French doors replaced a double window, filling the home with natural light and strengthening the indoor-outdoor connection that Auburn homeowners value year-round.
The most complex element of the renovation involved creating a 20-foot clear span to achieve a seamless open floor plan. Four engineered 24-inch LVL beams were carefully installed within the ceiling cavity. Through precise planning, temporary structural supports, and coordination with engineers, the result is a beautifully open space built with long-term integrity in mind. The fireplace was relocated to a new exterior wall, eliminating competing focal points and improving furniture flow.
In the kitchen, custom two-tone cabinetry now extends to the ceiling, paired with quartz countertops, a 36-inch gas range, and a white marble mosaic backsplash. White oak hardwood flooring throughout the main level ties everything together with warmth and continuity.
