September brings the start of fall and a variety of opportunities to enjoy arts, recreation and community programs in Auburn.
The month begins with Adventures in Art, a longstanding arts education program at the Jan Dempsey Community Arts Center. This year’s theme, The Gulf, introduces Auburn City Schools’ fifth-grade students to the longleaf pine ecosystem and the gopher tortoise through hands-on activities and a gallery talk with the educational outreach team from the Grand Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve and Auburn University Associate Professor Chuck Hemard.
An accompanying gallery exhibit will be open to the public Aug. 31st through Sept. 4th from 12:30-9 p.m., offering visitors a chance to explore Hemard’s photography which documents remnants of old-growth longleaf pine forests across the Deep South.
As temperatures begin to cool, Samford Pool will close for the season on Sept. 7th, wrapping up another summer of swimming, recreation and family fun. Residents can continue enjoying aquatic activities at Lake Wilmore Park Pool, which will transition to its fall schedule. The heated indoor facility offers year-round swimming opportunities for all ages.
Art enthusiasts can look forward to The Color Show: Warm or Cool, opening Sept. 17th at the Jan Dempsey Community Arts Center. The exhibition will showcase artists’ explorations of warm and cool color palettes, highlighting the impact color can have on mood, emotion and visual storytelling.
The month concludes with The 19-49 Social Club: This Ain’t Your Granny’s Bingo on Sept. 30th at the Hubert & Grace Harris Center. Designed for adults ages 19-49, the event combines bingo, prizes and socializing in a relaxed setting, making it a fun way to meet new people and enjoy an evening out.
From arts and culture to recreation and social gatherings, September offers plenty of ways to welcome the new season with Auburn Parks and Recreation.
