250 Years of Welcoming Beauty: The Journey of Fresh Flowers to Your Home

When most people see a fresh floral arrangement, they see beauty, color, fragrance, and celebration.

What they often do not see is the incredible journey those flowers have taken before they ever arrive at someone’s front door, kitchen table, wedding venue, or office.

Many of the premium blooms we use at Glow Floral & Events begin their lives on flower farms in South America, especially in places like Ecuador and Colombia, where the climate and elevation create ideal growing conditions. Some flowers are harvested high in the mountains and begin traveling within hours of being cut.

That journey is surprisingly fast and incredibly delicate.

Flowers are carefully harvested, hydrated, cooled, packed, and flown into Miami, which serves as one of the largest floral import hubs in the United States. From there, they move through distributors and wholesalers before finally making their way to our floral distributor in Birmingham, Alabama.

Once the flowers arrive in Birmingham, the processing begins immediately. The stems are carefully unpacked, recut by snipping the ends so they can properly absorb water, and placed into fresh hydration solutions and nutrient-rich water. This process is crucial because flowers are living products, and proper hydration is what gives them a longer shelf life and helps maintain their beauty throughout their journey.

After processing in Birmingham, the flowers are delivered to our studio at Glow Floral & Events, where we repeat the entire process again — but we take it even further.

Every stem is inspected individually. We remove excess foliage to prevent bacteria growth and carefully determine which blooms need refrigeration immediately and which flowers should hydrate at room temperature first. Different varieties require different handling methods, and understanding that process is essential to ensuring the freshness, performance, and longevity of the florals.

One of the most important steps in our studio is sanitation. We disinfect all of our floral buckets thoroughly to remove bacteria before any flowers are placed inside. Clean water and sanitized containers are critical to keeping flowers healthy and extending vase life.

We also believe patience matters.

At Glow Floral & Events, we always allow flowers at least 24 hours to hydrate properly before we begin designing arrangements whenever timing allows. This gives the blooms time to fully drink, open naturally, and strengthen before they are transformed into bouquets, centerpieces, or installations. Flowers are living things. They respond to care.

That is part of what we love most about this industry. There is both artistry and stewardship involved in what we do. Behind every beautiful arrangement is a tremendous amount of knowledge, preparation, timing, and attention to detail.

Summer is actually one of my favorite times to enjoy fresh flowers at home. Bright seasonal blooms can completely change the feeling of a room. They bring life into kitchens, entryways, offices, and gathering spaces in a way that few things can.

Fresh flowers are not only for weddings or major events. Sometimes they are simply about creating joy in everyday life.

A small arrangement on the counter while family visits for the weekend. A cheerful bouquet delivered to a friend who needs encouragement. Fresh stems brightening an office during a busy workweek. Flowers have a way of slowing us down and helping us notice beauty again.

One of my favorite things is helping clients set up regular floral deliveries during the summer months so their homes or businesses always feel fresh, welcoming, and alive.

When you understand the journey behind every bloom, you begin to appreciate flowers a little differently. They are more than decorations. They are the result of growers, transport teams, distributors, wholesalers, floral designers, and countless caring hands all working together to create something beautiful.

And for us at Glow Floral & Events, it is truly a privilege to help bring that beauty into your everyday moments.
