September is an important month for anyone enrolled in a Medicare Advantage or Medicare Part D prescription drug plan. This is when plans send the Annual Notice of Change, commonly called the ANOC.
The ANOC explains how your current plan will change for 2027. These changes take effect January 1 and may affect your coverage, healthcare costs, prescriptions, provider network or additional benefits.
It can be tempting to set the document aside—especially if you are satisfied with your current coverage—but reviewing it could help you avoid unexpected costs or coverage issues next year.
What Should You Review in Your ANOC?
Focus on changes to:
- Premiums, deductibles and copayments
- Prescription coverage and drug tiers
- Doctor, hospital and pharmacy networks
- Maximum out-of-pocket costs
- Dental, vision, hearing and other benefits
Even if your premium stays the same, your costs, coverage or provider network may change.
Important Prescription Drug Changes for 2027
Medicare Part D prescription drug coverage is changing again in 2027.
The maximum annual deductible for the standard Part D benefit will increase from $615 in 2026 to $700 in 2027. Some plans may charge a lower deductible or apply it only to certain drug tiers, so be sure to review your plan’s specific details.
The annual out-of-pocket threshold for covered Part D medications will also increase from $2,100 to $2,400.
Your actual costs will depend on your plan, medications, drug tiers, pharmacy and eligibility for assistance programs such as Extra Help. These higher limits make reviewing your prescription coverage especially important for 2027.
Preparing for the Annual Election Period
The Medicare Annual Election Period runs from October 15 through December 7. During this time, Medicare beneficiaries can review their coverage and make certain changes for 2027.
