Is It Just a Clumsy Phase? What Movement Can Tell Us About Development

“She trips over absolutely nothing.”

Again.

You glance over, she pops back up, laughs, and takes off running as if nothing happened. A well-meaning friend smiles and says, “Oh, she’s just in that clumsy stage.”

Maybe she is.

Or maybe she’s giving us another opportunity to pay attention.

As parents, we tend to celebrate the big milestones—first smiles, first steps, first words. But sometimes it’s the smaller, everyday moments that give us the greatest insight into our children’s development.

The way they run across the playground.

How they climb the ladder at the park.

Whether they hop confidently on one foot.

How easily they catch themselves after they stumble.

Movement is one of the first languages children speak, long before they can tell us how they’re feeling.

Think of the nervous system as your child’s “command center.” Every jump, climb, skip, tumble, and new skill starts with communication between the brain and the body. As that communication becomes more organized and efficient, children often move with greater confidence, coordination, and ease. That’s one of the reasons we pay so much attention to how children move—not just when they reach a milestone.

Every child develops at their own pace, and a few bumps and bruises are simply part of childhood. But if you notice your child consistently avoiding certain movements, frequently tripping, always favoring one side, struggling with balance, or having difficulty keeping up with activities that should feel fun, those are all worthwhile observations.

Not because they automatically mean something is wrong.

But because our children’s bodies often give us clues long before they have the words to explain what’s going on.

One of the greatest gifts we can give our children is simply paying attention.

Sometimes reassurance is exactly what a family needs. Other times, those little observations open the door to conversations that can help support healthy growth and development.

At Family Essentials Chiropractic, we’re passionate about helping children build healthy foundations from the very beginning. Our goal is never to label a child or create unnecessary worry. Instead, we look at how the nervous system is functioning, how your child is moving, and how we can support them as they grow into confident, active, thriving kids.

The Family Wellness Challenge

This week, spend just five minutes watching your child play.

No phone.

No distractions.

No correcting.

Simply watch.

Notice how they run, jump, climb, balance, crawl, and recover after they fall. You’re not looking for perfection—you’re simply learning the incredible language of childhood movement.

You might be surprised by how much you notice.

The goal isn’t to look for problems—it’s to notice progress. Every hop, climb, skip, tumble, and victory is another chapter in your child’s incredible developmental story. Sometimes, slowing down long enough to simply watch is one of the greatest gifts we can give them.

Until next month…

Keep asking questions.

Keep trusting your instincts.

And keep building healthy families from the inside out.
