A beautiful home is an investment worth protecting. While fall in Waconia brings colorful leaves and crisp evenings, it also provides a short window to take care of details that can make a big difference once winter arrives.

Before the first significant snowfall or freeze, consider giving your home a seasonal checkup:

1. Start at the top.

Inspect your roof for damaged shingles, aging materials and compromised flashing. Catching a small issue now can prevent a larger, more expensive problem later.

2. Keep water moving away from your home.

Clean gutters and make sure downspouts direct water away from the foundation. Proper drainage is especially important as temperatures fluctuate and moisture freezes.

3. Prepare your heating system.

Schedule your annual furnace or HVAC service and replace filters. A professional inspection can identify potential problems before you’re relying on your system every day.

4. Check your fireplace and chimney.

If a warm fire is part of your winter routine, have the chimney inspected and cleaned before the season gets underway.

5. Seal out the cold (not to mention bugs and mice).

Check windows, exterior doors and weatherstripping for cracks and drafts. Well-maintained windows and doors improve comfort and energy efficiency. Don’t forget the seal on your garage door.

6. Protect your outdoor investment.

Inspect decks, patios, landscaping and exterior lighting. Remove dead or damaged tree limbs that could become hazardous under heavy snow or ice.

7. Don’t overlook the details.

Disconnect hoses, protect exterior faucets, inspect walkways and driveways, and test your sump pump. Small tasks are easy to postpone until they become urgent.

Well-maintained homes show their value. When it’s time to move, buyers notice when a property has been consistently cared for, from the roof and mechanical systems to landscaping and exterior finishes.

Your home doesn’t need to be perfect. Thoughtful maintenance helps preserve its condition, protect your investment and make it easier to enjoy today and prepare for tomorrow.

This fall, take a little time to look at your home as one of your most significant investments. A few hours of attention now can pay dividends long after the leaves are gone.
